Sullivan East Cross Country Serves Others

The Sullivan East cross country team spent several days in Abingdon training, team-building, and serving others over the summer. In addition to the practices and games that were part of the team camp, the athletes had the opportunity to partner with Cornerstone Christian Academy, a small private school in Abingdon, VA, and reach out to serve the Abingdon community. The first day of service was geared around serving the school that was hosting the team. The athletes spent several hours moving entire classrooms of furniture from one part of the school to another. The second day of service was designed to help a food bank in Abingdon. The athletes completed a number of tasks including cleaning floors, cleaning parking lots, sorting boxes of donated nail polish, and an assortment of other jobs. A special thank you to Sullivan County teachers Doris Meade and Cindy Dyer for joining with Sullivan East High School and reaching out to serve others.

 Sullivan Garden's Garden Camp

Sullivan Garden's Garden Camp was held over the summer for students who were interested in learning more about gardening and nature. Master Gardeners, Ben Hunter and Lynn Hicks volunteered their time to help educate teachers and students on proper gardening techniques.  Mary Faulkner a retired teacher from Rock Springs helped to organize this camp and purchase materials. We were able to construct two new raised beds and a new pumpkin patch. Our garden now includes 9 raised beds, pumpkin patch and thornless blackberry bushes. Students also had the opportunity to learn and create with teachers and volunteers.  Two students from Sullivan South,  Matt King and Josh Estep, helped each student build their very own bird house.
