 Sullivan Gardens "Little Free Library"
Sullivan County Schools is excited to announce of first "Little Free Library" located at Sullivan Gardens School.  It is our hope that the library will engage students, families, neighborhoods and the entire community to promote literacy and foster unity.  When a child can walk down the street to choose a book, take it home and read it, and return again for another, that child has been given one of the essential tools she/he needs in order to learn and grow.

What is a Little Free Library?  It's a "take a book, return a book" gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories.  In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book and when you can, bring back another to share.  The books are always a gift, never for sale!

The Little Free Library will be located in front of the middle school building, at the flagpole.  The Grand Opening will be on May 18, 2015.

If you have books you would like to donate, please drop off at Sullivan Gardens School.

Holston Valley 7th Graders Participate in Newspaper in Education Program
Seventh grade students at Holston Valley Middle School have been busy with writing this year. They have spent lots of time working on the new mnemonics and devices that teachers learned about this summer to help with their skills. However, they also had a little fun with their writing! The students participated each week in submitting paragraphs to the Kingsport Times News Newspaper in Education program. NIE is a program sponsored by Kingsport Times News and many local area businesses. Teachers attend workshops during the summer to learn about using the newspaper as a current, relevant and educational resource in their classroom and each participating teacher receives newspapers each day for use in the classroom and to teach students of all ages and abilities. NIE spans across a seven county area throughout Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, including a large number of schools ranging in grade participation from Kindergarten to 12th Grade. The program supports education with newspaper subscriptions, curriculum materials, presentations, and contests. The 7th grade ELA classes at HVMS regularly participate in the weekly "Write On" topic. Each week students receive a new topic in which they are to write a paragraph on. Students compete with countless other entries and there is never a guarantee on being chosen. However, here at HVMS, we are VERY PROUD to say that we have had several of our student's work chosen and published in the paper. Entries are published on Wednesdays in the Kingsport Times News NIE section. We would like to congratulate the following students: Lindsey Arnold, Seth Burke, Alexis Cordle, Brittney Cox, Carolyn Doss, Lindsay Fletcher, Kammie Jones, Lake Mullins, Brittany Norris, Mariah Rowland, Kaitlyn Slagle, and Campbell Smith. Several of these students have had multiple paragraphs published.

Miller Perry News

Miller Perry Elementary held  a TCAP KICK-OFF PEP RALLY to encourage students to do their best of the test. Students were encouraged by the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade teaching teams. These teachers encouraged the students to "shake off" anxiety with a musical production of Taylor Swift's hit song "Shake It Off." They were also reminded all the faculty and staff knew each one of them could ROCK THE TEST! Pictured is the third grade teaching team of Johannah Turner, Cary Boggs and Rhonda McConnell leading the students in an enthusiastic rendition of Queen's "We will ROCK YOU!"

Miller Perry Elementary Students Thomas Buchanan, Presley Sweat and Jacob McMurray came to principal Dr. Angie Baker a few weeks ago and asked if they could start a school newspaper. Over the next several weeks, these three boys gave up their recess time to interview teachers and students, conduct surveys, design the newspaper and edit the final version. The first edition of the Miller Perry Enterprise went home Friday, April 24th.  This team has another important job to complete before the end of the school year. Their next assignment is to create an application to be used at the first of next year to select three new 4th grade members of the newspaper team. These boys will be 5th graders and they want to train the new reporters and editors so the newspaper can be effectively passed on from year to year.  Dr. Angie is proud to say these three boys were responsible for the school newspaper from idea to completion including the newspaper motto which is "the sky's the limit!"
