Ketron Superheroes |
Look! It's a bird! It's a plane! No wait. It's Ketron Elementary School fourth graders. Students and teachers in fourth grade are SUPER excited about preparing for TCAP testing. They have decided to use a superhero theme to focus their attention on final preparations for testing. The students "earn" super powers by completing certain academic tasks over the next few weeks. The fourth grade teachers decorated the halls and dressed as super heroes to kick off the program. Maci says, "I think this will affect us because we think it's cool." Gunner adds, "It inspires me to take time and think about the questions." That just might be exactly what the teachers were hoping would happen.

Miller Perry Second Graders Participated in Virtual Academy Lesson |
Miller Perry Second Graders participated in their first virtual academy lesson with the help of Dr. Shadden and CTE students from Central High School. The CTE students are enrolled in Ms. Sally Shipley's foundations of education class. Miller Perry second graders participated in a lesson taught by a teacher located in a classroom in Ohio. The students under the virtual teacher's direction were assisted by the CTE students from Central. Together, we learned more about Dr. Seuss and created a bead project. It was an excellent partnership with valuable learning experiences gained by both high school and elementary students.

Computer Technology at Holston Valley Middle School |
Computer Technology classes at Holston Valley Middle School have started off their 9 weeks focusing on using different software and doing research using Google Chrome and the Tennessee Electronic Library. Sixth graders have had a quick review of using the keyboard and are now working in Publisher. Each student is creating a company/store and using the brochure item out of Publisher to learn how to cut, use graphics, font styles and sizes plus fill in colors to advertise their store. Focus is on the types of persuasive words that can entice a customer to visit the store. Seventh graders are finishing up their review of Tennessee facts as a review for the TCAPs. Each student has been looking into the natural regions, the Grand Divisions, landforms, agricultural growth plus major cities in the state. Information has been put together in a mobile and in a table that each student had to create. Eighth graders are learning about careers for the future through the use of library books and the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Each student has compiled information and graphics to be put into a collage to share with the class.

Mary Hughes Kindergarteners Visit Fire Department |
The Mary Hughes Kindergarten classes had a wonderful day at Kingsport Fire Station #7. They learned about fire safety and witnessed an actual call. Thankfully, there were a couple of dads there to share their firefighter knowledge while we waited. Afterwards we enjoyed a picnic lunch and a fun filled time at Warriors Path State Park. Thank you to all that helped make this field trip a huge success!
