Sullivan North Students Make All-County Band

Sullivan County Schools All County Band was exceptional this year in the high school group.  Dr. Joe Moore, Marching Band Director for ETSU, was our guest clinician, and students truly enjoyed working with him. Six students from Sullivan North High School made All-County Band:  Micaela Jones - 10th chair clarinet, Eli Waycaster - 8th chair percussion, Brendan Sherfey - 4th chair trombone, Megan Wyrick - 3rd chair flute, Laken Mooney - 2nd chair flute (1st piccolo), and Elissa Hurley - 1st chair tenor sax.  Congratulations to these fine musicians!

Holston Valley 7th Graders Create Monsters

The seventh grade science classes at Holston Valley Middle School had a frightening good time creating monsters during the recent genetics unit. To show off their "monster" skills, the students drew and colored a monster based on the traits that were determined by flipping two coins. Each side of the coin represented a different characteristic for a trait. For the trait of tail shape, students flipped each coin and the side of each coin allowed the students to decide if the tail would be curly or straight. The seventh grade students continued to flip their coins and mark their traits until their very own unique creature could be made. All of the science classes had a great time showing off their creative skills while learning at the same time!

Blountville Elementary News

The fourth grade students at Blountville Elementary have been writing books that will soon be published. The books will be 14 pages long, full color, hardback books about a variety of science topics. They are using this as a review for TCAP and working on their grammar and editing skills. The students have been working very hard on the books that they will cherish forever.

One of Blountville Elementary 's Social Intervention classes was working hard this St. Patrick's Day.  Students were learning fractions on the SmartBoard using a holiday theme.  Fractions can often be a difficult concept but the hands on work the teacher provided helped them understand.

Singing Around the Campfire at Emmett Elementary

On March 16, 2015, Emmett Elementary students held a fabulous program full of camp songs to welcome the beginning of spring! Pre-K, Kindergarten, Second, and Fourth grades all performed at the PTA meeting. Each class worked hard to prepare songs for the program. Everyone did a great job! Thanks, Mrs. Wright, for such an awesome display of our school's talent!

49ers Football Star Reads to Ketron Elementary Students

A surprise reader showed up in 2nd grade at Ketron Elementary school. 49ers football star Daniel Kilgore read a book to all 2nd grade students. Students listened intently as he read Oh The Places You'll Go to celebrate Dr. Seuss week.   Daniel Kilgore is a former student of Dobbyns Bennett High School.

Mary Hughes Appreciates Marty Silver

In appreciation to Marty Silver for his enthusiasm in educating our students, Mrs. Bryant's first grade class presented Mr. Silver with a frame of his last name made out of nature items such as flowers, rocks, sticks, etc. Photographs courtesy of the Hare family.

Miller Perry Holds Annual Boys Banquet

Miller Perry Elementary School held their annual Boys' Banquet on Thursday, March 9, 2015. Miller Perry boys returned to school on this evening with a  gentlemen or guest whom they deem special in their life . Everyone shared  a delicious meal. Assistance with serving was provided by the Sullivan South Culinary Arts students under the direction of their teacher Ms. Nicki Hurlbert. We used the newspaper to decorate the tables and encouraged the boys to become SUPER READERS! Can you answer the question we posed at the banquet? Who worked for the Daily Planet? None other than Clark Kent! Each boy took home a pair of Clark Kent glasses so they can become SUPER READERS, too! SUPERMAN agrees! Pictured in his Clark Kent glasses is Christian Lee.

Miller Perry Fifth Graders Create Rockets

Fifth Graders recently experimented with the effect of fin configuration on horizontal distance. Students created paper rockets and fired them down the hallways of Miller Perry. Students then added one, two, three or four fins and projected each configuration three times. Students took the average of each additional fin and then charted and graphed their results.
