Sullivan East Students Receive Roan Scholarship From ETSU |
Congratulations to Annie Malcolm and Morgan Munsey of Sullivan East High School for receiving the Roan Scholarship from ETSU. The Roan Scholarship is one of ETUS's most distinguished merit scholarships, covering full tuition and fees and providing allowances for both room and board and textbooks. Scholars also receive a new Dell laptop computer.
Annie and Morgan were nominated by their teachers and then participated in a very lengthy application and interview process. Teachers nominated candidates based on several characteristics such as leadership ability, strong character, intellectual curiosity, and evidence of a physically active lifestyle.
Annie and Morgan both carry a 4.0 grade point average while taking the most demanding courses the school offers.
Annie is a gifted cross-country runner and is active in several school clubs and organizations at East. She has also participated in mission trips and is very involved in our community outside of school.
Morgan is a captain of the East cheer squad and organized a cheer team that was open to young girls with disabilities. She is involved in several school clubs and also works with the Boys and Girls Club.
There has only been one other time that two students from the same school have received the Roan Scholarship. This happened over a decade ago. Unfortunately, these two students did not complete the program together. We at Sullivan East are completely confident that Morgan Munsey and Annie Malcolm will be the first two students to receive the scholarship from the same school and complete the program.

Mary Hughes Homecoming |
The week of January 12-16, 2015, was Mary Hughes annual Homecoming Week. The students were able to participate in many fun and exciting activities throughout the week. Homecoming is a highly anticipated event that students look forward to every year. All students were invited to participate in many great events throughout the week. There was something for each and every student, kindergarten through 8th grade, to enjoy. Each day there was a themed dress up day for students and staff. On Monday, students chose between wearing sports jerseys or dressing like they were headed to the beach. On Tuesday, we had the ever popular Disney Day or (new this year) Hollywood Day where students could dress up and be like a star for the day. Wednesday brought Duck Dynasty Day and Superhero Day. On Thursday, we had School Spirit Day and Tacky Day. They students were also able to wear crazy hats. Finally, on Friday, we had everyone's favorite-Pajama Day and Bad Hair Day. Dressing up together brings a sense of comradery to the school.
Other activities during our Homecoming week included a homeroom spirt door decorating contest, a pep rally to pump up our basketball teams for the homecoming basketball game, and the recognition of our basketball players by the cheerleaders during the week. On Thursday night, we had the annual crowning of our Homecoming Queen 2015 and her court, with Miss Lauren Ledford, daughter of Scott and Tracie Ledford, being crowned queen. Her court consisted of 8th grade representative, Camiel Oliver, daughter of Brad and Cherie Oliver, 7th grade representative, Autumn Moore, daughter of Larry and Melanie Moore and Janet Hanson, and 6th grade representative, Adeline Ensley, daughter of Jason and Rebecca Ensley. The crowning was followed by our varsity basketball teams playing exciting games against Providence Academy and coming out victorious in both games. On Friday night, students enjoyed a magical night as they attended our "A Night in Paris" Homecoming Dance. They danced the night away and made many wonderful memories with their friends and classmates.
Finally, at halftime of our homecoming basketball game, we took the time to recognize all attending alumni who participated in basketball, track, or softball while attending Mary Hughes. Alumni from as far back as the 1960's as well as alumni from 2014 returned home to Mary Hughes to be honored at halftime. They got to reminisce as they once again heard their name called out while they ran through the tunnel made by the cheerleaders and the crowd cheered them on.
As you can see, Homecoming, to many people, is just a word. But to the Mary Hughes family it is truly a coming home to remember good times and make new memories together.

Toys From Cops provides families in need with the opportunity to "shop" for holiday gifts for their children. Students were incredibly helpful in assisting families in getting bulky items to their cars and acting as an extra set of hands as parents sifted through tables of free clothing while corralling bouncy, excited children. Sullivan South JROTC Visits Washington, DC |
This past Friday, cadets from Sullivan South's Air Force JROTC program traveled to Washington DC for a "Curriculum In Action" field trip. They visited the Capitol Building, war memorials, museums, George Washington's home at Mt Vernon, various monuments, and most significantly, Arlington National Cemetery. At Arlington, the cadets were given the opportunity to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers in remembrance of those buried there. Cadet Shianna Holderfield was one of the cadets involved in the ceremony. She took the place of her brother Dylan Ferguson who was supposed to lay the wreath but was killed just one week earlier. The wreath was placed in his honor. Also in attendance was Representative Phil Roe from the first congressional district of Tennessee. Dr. Roe made a special trip to visit with the cadets and share his condolences for their lost friend and brother.
Additionally, the cadets presented the American Flag at a professional basketball game between the Washington Wizards and the Brooklyn Nets. Overall, the trip was a huge success and the cadets handled themselves with respect and professionalism.
