Sullivan East Cheerleaders Participate in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade |
Nastasha Gilbert and MaKayla Lady represented the Sullivan East Cheerleading team at the 86th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Cheerleaders and dancers from across the country are invited to be a part of the Varsity Spirit Squad, and perform at the nationally televised parade. Both girls received their invite to participate by attending a summer Universal Cheerleaders Association Camp, and by being co-captains of the East team. The girls spent a week in New York practicing the routine featured on live TV, attending Broadway shows, and touring some of the most famous tourist sites in the United States. Over 780 cheerleaders nationwide performed the professionally choreographed routine to the song "Rock and Roll All Nite" performed by the rock band KISS.

South Teacher and Student Travel to National Astronomy Conference to Present Research Poster |
Kayla Jenkins, a student at Sullivan South High School, and her Science Research teacher, Tom Rutherford, recently traveled to the 225th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle, Washington. The two are members of a research team composed of students and their teachers from several states (Tennessee, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, and Connecticut), as part of a program operated by Caltech called the NASA/IPAC Teacher Archive Research Program (NITARP). The NITARP program has students and teachers involved in authentic research projects using real data provided by various NASA observatories. The group's project involves attempting to find a way to measure the true brightness of an active galactic nucleus (an AGN) by measuring its color, which has applications for refining the distance scale of the universe. This is the second year of the multi-year project. In addition to attending the conference, the group spent a day viewing the sights of Seattle, such as the Space Needle (its much taller than it seems) and the first Starbucks, as well as making a visit to the University of Washington main campus.

Colonial Heights/Bluff City Basketball News |
Bluff City Coach Brent Tuell graciously allowed Colonial Heights Middle School's manager, David Hartgrove, to play in Tuesday night's 7th grade game. David had worked hard all year long as the manager but had not seen any action prior to the final home game for Colonial Heights, but when he came onto the court, he received a thunderous ovation from both teams' fans in a tremendous display of sportsmanship. Chargers' coaches Adam Slaughter and Michael McMeans salute Bluff City's show of support!

Recently the Mary Hughes band performed at Rocky Mount for their Living History Christmas Tours. The students were on hand for several hours to play for guests in the reception area as they finished their tours. The students were very well behaved and the guests really appreciated them being there. There were lots of compliments. This was a great way to promote the band program and for the students to give back to the community.

What Are Central Heights Third Graders Learning? |
Third graders at Central Heights Elementary School are eager for someone to ask them about what they are learning. Students are given lanyards with instructions to ask them about a particular skill. The students wear the lanyards during the day in all their activities. Each time they are asked about their lanyard skill and answer correctly, they earn a point. The students with the most points at the end of the week receives a prize. Mrs. Casasola adapted this from something she saw a the Title I Conference last year. She says, "I had no idea they would get this into it. The are literally BEGGING people to ask them about their lanyard!". This is an activity that could be adapted to any subject, any topic, anything you want the students to master.
