Sullivan County Schools Launch Online Resource to Promote Community Dialogue and Engagement |
The Sullivan County School System is ringing in 2015 by introducing a new online communication tool designed to engage the community in more meaningful conversation regarding its schools and educational programs.
Beginning January 9, 2015, the "Let's Talk!" communications platform will be accessible via the homepage on the school system's website, www.sullivank12.net. Through "Let's Talk!", community members also have another means to converse on items pertaining to the school system's facility planning process.
"Let's Talk!" provides parents, teachers, staff, students and community members an opportunity to submit comments or inquiries to the school system. Submissions, which users can elect to send anonymously, are automatically routed to the appropriate staff member for follow-up. Designed and administered by K12 Insight, a nationally recognized technology and communications firm, the online resource will be accessible anytime, anywhere and on any device through the school system's website.
"We welcome collaboration with our staff, students, families and community members as we address important issues within our district," says Jubal Yennie, Director of Schools. "This online component is not intended to replace phone calls, face-to-face meetings or email correspondence, but it will provide another tool for facilitating ongoing and productive conversations within our community." |
Holston Valley Middle School Awarded Toyota Corporation Community Grant |
Holston Valley Middle School in Bristol, TN was awarded the Toyota Corporation Community Grant through local dealership Toyota of Bristol. The school was awarded $2500 from Toyota Corporation for their music and chorus program. The grant was written by Jill Wishon, music teacher. The funds will be used to start a "Guitar Lab" at the school. Twenty student guitars and supplies will be purchased to begin this inaugural program. Each student will be exposed to a 9 week course involving the learning of guitar. Students will be able to: Play guitar with proper technique, read musical notation, evaluate musical performances, understand the relationship between music and the world beyond the school setting, and use music to creatively express oneself in a positive way. Also, $500 will be used to purchase instruments for the Special Ed department in conjunction with the developing field of Music Therapy. This technique is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. The goal of HVMS is to become a leader locally in developing arts programs to solidify the region's title of The Birthplace of Country Music and uphold this musical tradition for years to come. We believe every child has the right and ability to succeed. HVMS is committed to this philosophy.
Toyota Corporation states, "How can we ensure that students get their best opportunity to succeed? By supporting critical programs, working with organizations who believe in promoting family literacy, and awarding scholarships to promising students. And through these close partnerships, we can help enrich lives locally while building a better future for all." Toyota of Bristol believes in the arts and is happy to present Holston Valley Middle School with this Corporate Community Grant.

Innovation Academy News |
On Tuesday, December 16th, Innovation Academy held its third annual STEM Holiday Celebration. The sixth grade class did a virtual world tour that required students to research, created a Keynote presentation, used a green screen for a video clip, and created a marque backdrop complete with several circuits of lights.

A theatrical adaptation of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens was presented in a progressive format by the seventh grade students. The audience was led on a tour of Scrooge's life by Scrooge himself. Students wrote the script, design and built the set, became the actors, and provided live musical interludes for the audience.

The Industrial Revolution was the focus of the eighth grade class. Students built models of important innovations, that were made during this time period, completely out of cans. Computer-aided design software was used throughout the building process and was included in the students' presentations. The school successfully collected over 2,000 lbs. of canned food for the project. Once the models were disassembled, all of the food was donated.

The evening was a great demonstration of STEM Education that was visited by over 300 family and community members.

Baking with Bobcats |
The Miller Perry Cookbook "Baking with BOBCATS!" has been a huge success.
Each family recipe inside the cookbook is accompanied by the child's handprint. Miller Perry would like to thank our families for making the cookbook possible, Mrs. Melissa Riddle, our bookkeeper for overseeing the project, our art teacher Abby Williams and especially the CTE graphic arts students at Central High School. The CTE students published the cookbooks. Many thanks to those CTE students and their teacher, Ms. Rhonda Flanary.
It is wonderful to have a keepsake completed by Sullivan County Students.
Pictured with his recipe for Pumpkin Crunch is Dylan Cowan, 5th grade.
