County 4-H Public Speaking Contest |
Students in the 4-H Youth Development Program, administered by the University of Tennessee Extension and Tennessee State University Cooperative Extension Office, participated in the annual 4-H Public Speaking Contest. The event was held at the Kingsport Center for Higher Education on the evening of Thursday, December 11th. Thirty-seven (37) youth gave speeches about various topics, chosen by the individual members. Many of these youth earned the opportunity to participate in the county event by first giving their speech in their class or 4-H club contest. The event, which is a component of the Communication & Public Speaking 4-H project area, serves to give youth the opportunity to develop written and oral communication skills, build positive self-esteem and work to achieve personal goals. Bluff City, Holston, Indian Springs, and Miller Perry Elementary schools were represented along with several homeschooled 4-H members participating. Congratulations to each of the youth who gave a speech at their school or county contest. Thank you to the teachers and administrators who supported their students and this 4-H event. Senior high winners, grades 9-12, will compete in a regional event on the UT Knoxville campus, February 7th. Winners from grades 4-8 will compete in a multi-county event, February 24th at Johnson County High School.

Bluff City Elementary Celebrates Grinchmas |
Students at Bluff City Elementary put a little twist on Christmas this year by celebrating Grinchmas. Grinchmas is a celebration of giving back to your community and family. It is based on the book "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" and focuses on growing your heart 3 sizes by doing good deeds for others. In other words you gain so much more by doing and giving than by receiving. Led by the 5th grade, students were encouraged to improve our building, grounds and relationships with students and staff at BCES. 5th grade students opted to buy gifts for pre-school and headstart students rather than exchange presents with each other. 4th grade students focused on being kind and helpful to one another. 3rd grade students brought in donations for local animal shelters rather than doing a gift exchange within their classes. Other activities included cleaning the auditorium for the 3rd grade program, caroling, sharing Christmas stories with kindergartners and eating a mixed up lunch with a new friend from a different grade. The students also were given a task for each day such as tell someone they did a good job, say please and thank you, or smile at someone. Students then wrote on a paper heart what made their heart grow and PTA placed the hearts on a tree for everyone to read. The students will top their hard work off with a visit from the Grinch on their party day. Bluff City is really proud of the random acts of kindness and the relationships that were built during this special time.

Going Green at Emmett Elementary School |
Emmett Elementary School has an exciting new addition to their building; however, interestingly enough, it lies outside of the classroom walls. With the help of Eagle Scout, Nick Thompson, and donations from White Construction and Midway Lumber, a Sensory Garden was created for Cheryl Chandler's class. The garden will be used for students to see, touch, smell, and taste plants they may not be exposed to otherwise. "Presently, the plants include lavender, rosemary, spearmint, lamb's ear, mums, lettuce, and some (other) ornamental plants," says Chandler. All classes will have the opportunity to utilize the garden to help complete standards-based learning activities such as data collecting and identifying plant cycles. Sullivan East High School's Future Farmers of America (FFA) students and leader, Mike Smith, will be mentoring Emmett students and working alongside them in the new garden.

Making a Difference at Emmett Elementary School |
Emmett Elementary would like to thank Dr. Tom Lewis for his generous support. Dr. Lewis provided funding for our new "Shining Star" jackets. Dr. Lewis is a native of Bristol, Tennessee. He attended Emmett Elementary and graduated from Holston Valley High School. He went on to receive his B.A. from King College, an M.S. from UNC Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee. He retired from Boeing in 2004 after 30 years in aerospace. Dr. Lewis has served as a member of the King University Board of Trustees and is currently the Chairman of the Academic Affairs Committee.
As a native of the area, Dr. Lewis feels strongly about supporting educational goals of Emmett students. He believes children should aspire to excel academically, set goals, and be rewarded for their achievements. Thanks again, Dr. Lewis, for giving back to your community!

Tennessee Valley Authority Provides Emmett with a Trail |
TVA was looking for a great opportunity to partner educationally with a school, and they have found one. Emmett and TVA have collaborated to open several private trails behind EES. Coach Chris Reynolds reached out to Randy Short of the TVA to see if pathways behind the school could be cleared and utilized by teachers and students. With TVA and Randy Short's help, Coach Reynolds made this dream a reality. Along the trails there are several geocaching sites where a GPS can be used to find "treasure" or items hidden along pathways in containers. Having the trail is a great resource for teachers to incorporate outdoor activities as well as make learning a challenge for students. Emmett Elementary School thanks you, TVA, for making this possible!

North/South JROTC Flag Football Game |
On Saturday, Dec 13th, JROTC cadets from Sullivan North HS and Sullivan South HS met on the frozen tundra of John Compton Field at South HS. The game was simple; a game of flag football between rival schools. The winner taking bragging rights until the next time they met. But that Saturday, a deeper mission was born. On THAT Saturday, these cadets got together to learn and experience comraderie, teamwork, sportsmanship, and an appreciation for hard work, regardless of the outcome.
Navy JROTC at North and Air Force JROTC at South exist to accomplish the mission of building citizens of character. These are not recruiting arms of the military, but programs to promote self-confidence, respect and integrity. The idea of a flag football game came from Maj Chris Fain, the lead instructor at North HS. The cadets came up with rules, organized the venue and practiced right up until game time. In the end, South was victorious on the scoreboard, but every player came off the field a winner. The two programs plan to meet every year, exchange handshakes and build yet another tradition between dedicated cadets and quality students/citizens.
