Student Spotlight - Ashley Ferrell - Sullivan North High School |
Ashley Ferrell, from Sullivan North High School, recently received the 2014 Berea College Pinnacle Scholar Award of Excellence for her accomplishments in the field of Service.
The Pinnacle Scholar Awards program recognized outstanding high school seniors for their work in the fields of science, music, or service. Students are nominated by a local teacher or guidance counselor, and Berea College faculty and staff then select the top students in each category to receive the award.
Berea College created the Pinnacle Scholar Awards to recognize students in the region who demonstrate a strong potential to exert a positive influence on the future of Appalachia. The program helps the College fulfill its mission of serving the region through a focus on learning, labor, and service. Berea's Tuition Promise Scholarship guarantees no student pays tuition and admits only academically promising students, primarily from Appalachia, who have limited economic resources.
Determining this year's winners was particularly challenging due to the number and caliber of nominees. Ashley was chosen out of hundreds of nominees from across nine different states and was honored at a formal awards ceremony earlier this month. For more information about Berea College and its programs, please see www.berea.edu. |

Storybook Character Day at Mary Hughes |
Mary Hughes celebrates literature by having Storybook Character Day. Mrs. Sauls, the school librarian encouraged reading by asking students and teachers to dress up as their favorite book character. Students paraded their costumes across the stage for the school to enjoy. Mrs. Sauls read various Cinderella stories from different parts of the world to the students and they compared and contrasted the different variations of the stories. It was an exciting day as story book characters came to life!

Rock Springs Goes to Barter |
As part of a school-wide initiative to prepare students for the world beyond school walls, Rock Springs is taking every grade to the Barter Theater or the Symphony this school year. As part of the experience, students do a focused study on the proper manners and etiquette when attending a theater or a symphony. Students dress in formal clothes and discuss the proper ways of greeting people and inclusion in a social setting. As you can see from our pictures, the Kindergarten students had a blast!

Student Nutrition Initiative
|
The Sullivan County Health Department has launched a grant-funded initiative that aims to make it fun for children in Kindergarten through 12th grade to boost their servings of fruits, grains and vegetables. Dancing tomatoes, cardboard coaches and a customized theme song were all part of the fanfare surrounding the November 12th announcement of the pilot program at Emmett Elementary School. The dancing tomatoes were "Tennessee Tomato" and his sidekick, "Tammy Toe", the mascots for the program who make learning about nutrition fun through an age-appropriate curriculum. The cardboard cutouts are coaches from Sullivan East High School. The coaching staff is on board to serve as role models, and students will dine in the cafeteria under the watchful gaze of their cardboard likenesses, which will feature words of motivation for program participants.
