 The Kingsport Cardboard Challenge

On Saturday, October 4th, many Sullivan County students participated in the Second Annual Cardboard Challenge. This event, held at the Kingsport Farmers Market, is part of an event that takes place all over the world during the first weeks of August. Participants are invited to create whatever their imagination desires out of cardboard and other recyclable materials.

Participating this year were students from Ketron, Innovation Academy, Emmett, and Holston Middle School.

What is Grizzly TV?  Written by BCE Students

What is Grizzly TV:

Grizzly 'TV is a program that tells announcments and what is going on in school in a fun way!

We record students giving annoouncments and news about our school for example what we are having for lunch or what the weather is. Alot of kids enjoy speaking infront of the whole school giving the announcements and the younger kids enjoy watching! When they get in 5th Grade they will get to be on Grizzly TV. Every table in the class will get a job that they must find and write it on the script that the News Anchors will say on Grizzly TV.

Interview For Jaden and Andy:

Jaden and Andy have been on Grizzly TV and this is what they thought about it.

Was It Fun?

Jaden: Yes it was really fun!

Andy:I enjoyed it a whole lot!

What was your favorite part?

Jaden: My favorite part was when I got to be on camera, and when I got to write papers and put them on Grizzly TV!

Andy: My favorite part was when my body got chopped off from the blue screen since my shirt was blue!

Did you want to be on it more?

Jaden: No. It was embarrasing! (but it was fun)

Andy: I would have but I wanted the other kids to get to do it too!

Did you like writing the script for Grizzly TV?

Jaden: Yeah... writing the script was pretty fun.

Andy: Yes my favorite thing to write was the Breaking News!

Nicolette: Grizzly TV was really fun to do!

Haleigh: Grizzly TV was really entertaining to see people start laughing and messing up!

Jordan: I thought it was fun too!

Scarlett: It was fun to put it together the day before and then see it in the auditorium the next day!

 Volcanoes at Bluff City Elementary

Mrs. Nave's "Grizzly Time" Group read Magic Tree House Vacation Under the Volcano.  When they finished the book, students built volcanoes.  To get into the spirit of the time period students dressed in tunics.  They enjoyed making their volcanoes erupt!

Bluff City Elementary is Cooking in the Classroom

Mrs. Horne's Reading classes read "The Ugly Vegetable". The story is about a little girl and her mother that plant a Chinese vegetable garden. We discussed sequencing and the use of our five senses. The classes combined and the students chopped all of our Chinese vegetables. We combined the vegetables and made a delicious soup. We concluded our day with soup and fortune cookies.

Bluff City Elementary Girls on the Run

Our Girls on the Run team is up and running!  We are having fun, learning a little about ourselves, and getting in shape!  We have a group of 15 exceptional 4th & 5th graders who are coached by Brandie Greene, Leigh Anne Zollo and Kelly Miller.  Girls on the Run is so much fun!

 Colonial Heights News

Seth Gilmore, who spent the past year teaching English in Beijing, China, helped Mrs. Cox introduce her Social Studies unit on China this week at Colonial Heights Middle School. Seth taught about political, geographical, and social features of the country and taught the students some Chinese phrases. Additionally, at the end of his lesson, students played a game and the winners took home various artifacts from his trip, including chop sticks and Chinese currency.

Sullivan North's Multimedia Class and FBLA News

Mrs. Seale's Interactive Multimedia Class and FBLA members took a

field trip to Bristol, Virginia and Bristol, Tennessee for three technology

tours on September 24, 2014.

The students toured WJHL television station. The News/Weather, control room, and digital electronic cameras, and lighting provided a better understanding of how technology is used today.  The students

are currently using the green screen and focusing on video editing in class.  The green screen at the television station allowed students to see how it is used for advertising and the weather.

The students then walked to the Birthplace of Country Music Museum for the technology tour.  They interacted with history of sound and music.  The focus of this tour was how technology provided a

way for music to be recorded,  transported, stored, and delivered to audiences all over the world.  The history of technology and music from Appalachia began a music revolution and provided our

music heritage for others to enjoy. Whitney Hawkins commented  "After seeing and experiencing everything I am really surprised at how important this area is to country music."

Last, but not least a walk to the Paramount provided the students with a look at to the old movie projectors.  They received a history lesson on the Historic Paramount. They also learned of the project that replaced all of the lighting on the marquee with LED lights.  The students listened

to the organ and were taken backstage learn about more about the lighting and equipment.
