Holston Valley Middle Wins VH1 Keys+Kids Music Grant

Holston Valley Middle School celebrated receiving a $10,000 grant from VH1 on Wednesday, Sept. 10. Jill Wishon, the general music and chorus teacher, applied for the grant, and Holston Valley was one of 10 schools chosen nationwide. Mrs. Wishon and Mr. Lockhart, Holston Valley principal, accepted the piano and sound equipment for the school. VH1 joined the celebration by video to commend the school on its dedication to music and congratulate Mrs. Wishon. Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey, Director of Schools Jubal Yennie, and Birthplace of Country Music Museum representatives Thomas Richardson and Jessica Turner were on hand to help in congratulating the school for receiving the grant. To acknowledge the school's commitment to music, the Birthplace of Country Music Museum offered free admission to all of the school's 8th graders. The Patriot Pickers from East High School entertained the guests and students that attended the celebration.

Congratulations Ms. Wishon and Holston Valley Middle School!

MHS Sixth Grade Science Students Become Biome Game Masters!

Students in Mrs. Graham's science classes demonstrated their mastery of the seven major biomes by creating biome board games representing their assigned biomes. Students collaborated ideas for game strategies, informational text to include, game design to complement and mirror biomes, and rules to apply. The students individually created their games using a rubric check list to insure the games included biome geography, climate/ seasons, animals and abiotic/ biotic factors, threats to ecosystem of biome, and science vocabulary. The students exceeded Mrs. Graham's expectations, and the two days of engaging in educational science games were exciting and rewarding to the students. Several students voiced that the project was challenging, but it felt rewarding and honoring to have peers successfully play their games. One student Chloe Hale stated the following during closure reflective feedback: " It felt weird being a teacher for a day. I feel like I was part of the teaching, and the players learned more from my biome game's information than paying attention to moving around my board game." What an innovative, challenging science project to engage students in research skills, art making, collaborative planning, problem solving, leadership presentation, and reflection!

 Indian Springs Collects Plastic Bags
During the 2013-14 academic year, Indian Springs Elementary students helped the Sullivan County 4-H program reach a goal of collecting 500 pounds of plastic for recycling.  ISE collected 498 pounds of plastic.  The efforts of ISE4-H along with the UT/TSU Extension Office in Blountville diverted 705 total pounds of plastic from local landfills, instead sending the plastic to the Trex company to be reused as an ingredient in composite building materials.

Look who's enjoying the TREX bench!  Annie Grace Milam, Marleigh Pendleton, Chloe Nelson, Seth Robinette and Sophia Milam.

We are recycling again.  Please donate your clean plastic bags at ISE!!

Walter Malone is our 4-H Extension Agent.  Looking forward to a great 4-H Club school year!

Sullivan Central Welcomes STEM Program

written by Angel Cunningham, Central Journalism Student

This is Sullivan Central's first year offering STEM classes to a Freshman cohort within its course catalog. The STEM program is a combination of 5 core classes, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These classes overlap to create a rigorous learning environment for students who want to further their academic career. STEM classes last a full school year and prepare students for innovation growth that is occurring today and that will become more common in the future.

These classes are considered honors classes and are designed to challenge students by incorporating more skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, and moving at a much faster pace within the curriculum. Being involved in this program is a good preparation for college because it incorporates a hardworking learning environment along with real-world concepts. It makes connections between school, community, and work which in the long run, creates a well-rounded student and critical thinker. Engineering teacher at Sullivan Central High School, Benjamin Bolt, stated that, "They [students] will be learning things that I didn't even go over until college".

In this program students begin to understand the importance of their academic career, which eventually paves the way to their future. As of 2011, 20 percent of all jobs require a high level of knowledge in any one STEM field. Therefore, being a part of the STEM program can really help students in their pursuit for a desired career.

To be part of Sullivan Central's STEM cohort, students went through an application process. This process included 3 teacher recommendations as well as a short essay. In addition to the application process, a cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 was required to be admitted to the cohort.

Sullivan South Conducts Flag Retirement Ceremony

To commemorate the anniversary of September 11th and Patriot Day, cadets from Sullivan South's AF JROTC program conducted a flag retirement ceremony.  The brief but significant ceremony celebrated our Stars and Stripes and respectfully retired an older flag that had served her nation proudly.  A large portion of South's student body attended and were very respectful.  The faculty and students were also very appreciative of the cadets efforts.
