Market Day at Mary Hughes!
The third grade finished their economic study with a Market Day Celebration. The project is a cross curricular activity that combines ELA, Math and Social Studies as students become consumers and producers in a high energy, highly entertaining environment. Students had to design and create a product from scratch, develop advertising and then sell the product. The event allowed students to experience supply and demand first hand when several "hot" items sold out quickly. A few entrepreneurial students learned that they could turn and resell their "hot" items to other classmates for twice the original price, which in turn increased their own profit margin. Following a grading rubric, students were scored on advertising, product development, sales techniques, budgeting and profits. Overall the event was a tremendous success and one of the year's highlights.
Confetti Celebration!
Learning takes time and requires a lot of hard work. Piece by piece each student learns what is necessary to move from one grade to the next. Third graders at Mary Hughes take that literally and turns those pieces of work into a confetti celebration! Tests, quizzes and assignments completed throughout the year are cut into confetti and placed in the center of a parachute. Slowly students toss the confetti spreading their hard earned knowledge all over the place! Students are amazed at how much material they have covered this year and are thrilled to see how those tiny pieces of knowledge add up to a successful year. When the "spreading of knowledge" is finished, students rush to collect all those pieces in a bag to take home as a reminder of their third grade year. Something so simple brings great joy to the students and allows them the chance to truly celebrate!
