History Dress Up Day at Indian Springs Elementary

Fourth grade students enjoyed History Dress Up Day at Indian Springs Elementary on Friday, May 9th.  Students stated five facts about the person they portrayed.  Costumes were amazing!  Walking the halls that day were such people as George Washington, Martha Washington, Abe Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Thomas Jefferson, Indians, Pilgrims, Pocahontas, Eliza Lucas Pinckney and many more.  We also shared with the younger students by walking through the cafeteria as a living museum of history.

Indian Springs Elementary 4-H Club News

Indian Springs Elementary 4-H Club members were recently presented a Trex brand composite material bench for their efforts in the "Bags to Benches" service project.  The project has been around the community for a few years now and this year Sullivan County 4-H members from ISE took on the activity as a 4-H service project.  Together the ISE students and the UT/TSU Extension Office, of which the 4-H program is a part, collected over 635 pounds of plastic material for recycling this school year.  The plastic was donated to the Salvation Army of Kingsport who then processes the plastic into large bales and partners with the Trex company to have the plastic recycled.  In return for the recyclable material Trex compensates the Salvation Army for the material.  The funds are used to help with local food programs and other efforts of the Salvation Army in the Kingsport area.  The project has been an all around win for all involved.  It has helped to educate our youth on the importance of conservation, deferred waste from local landfills, and supported local community outreach programs through the Salvation Army.  During the recent presentation 4-H Extension Agent Walter Malone presented each of the ISE 4th and 5th grade students with a reusable tote bag on behalf of the University of Tennessee College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.  He was joined by Major Anthony Baso and Mrs. Linda Hall of the Salvation Army for the presentation of the composite bench.  We hope the project has helped to make our community, country and world a better place and encourage others to get involved by donating plastic bags for recycling at the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Kingsport.

Mary Hughes Kindergarteners Visit Fire Department

The kindergarten students from Mary Hughes Elementary visited Kingsport Fire Department Station #7 on a field trip on May 16th.  They learned about fire safety and observed first hand the importance of our community service personnel.  The children got to see the firefighters leave in a fire truck on a real emergency medical call, toured the fire station, and saw the many tools on the fire trucks that the firefighters use.  It was an exciting day.

Sullivan South Air Force JROTC News
For the 12th year in a row, Sullivan South Air Force JROTC had been presented the "Distinguished Unit" award by the headquarters AFJROTC.  Just a few of the things accomplished this year by the cadets that made this possible include:  performing our Veterans Day Program for the South community, marching in the Bristol Veterans Day parade, accomplishing over 1,500 hours of community service, presenting the colors at football and basketball games and other community events, and successfully competing at 7 regional drill and athletic competitions.  We look forward to continuing the tradition next year!
Sullivan North Student Council
The Sullivan North Student Council has been recognized as a state 4-Star Student Council for the 11th consecutive year.  Only 10 high schools in the state received this award at the state convention.  Sullivan North was the only high school east of Knoxville to earn this distinction.
