Weaver Elementary's Team Briggs Day |
Beginning in January, Weaver Elementary began collecting aluminum pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in honor of Briggs Goforth, a toddler who recently won his battle with cancer. Fifth grade sponsored the drive, offering a pizza party to the class who brought in the most tabs and a doughnut party for the second place finisher. On Friday, May 2nd, the entire school celebrated Team Briggs day with an assembly which included Briggs as the honored guest, his parents Tiffany and Dustin, proud grandparents Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey and wife Sincy, and Rowenta Bailey from the Ronald McDonald House. Ms. Bailey gave a speech in which she praised Weaver students for their hard work, saying she had never seen so many tabs at one time. The Ronald McDonald House will sell these tabs to a local recycler and use the proceeds to cover expenses for food and toiletries for families living there while children are hospitalized nearby at the Niswonger Children's Hospital.
Over the course of this drive, students began to speak about Briggs as if they know him personally and frequently asked for updates on his health during treatment for cancer. Weaver students worked hard to get as many tabs as possible for Briggs, even going dumpster diving at basketball games!

Lt. Governor and Commissioner of Education Visit Innovation Academy |
Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey and Commissioner of Education Kevin Huffman recently visited Innovation Academy to see the project based learning integral to the school. The special guests were escorted around the school by 7th grader Joseph Cox. At Innovation Academy, students study subjects through an integrated approach that enables them to see all knowledge as connected, rather than separated into discrete disciplines. Lessons include projects that encourage students to explore and question, think critically, solve complex problems, and communicate effectively in a digital world.

Sullivan South High School was awarded more than $4,900 to purchase five Macbook Air laptops, one HP wireless printer, and other associated supplies needed for the F.La.G.S. (French, Latin, German, Spanish) project. This grant proposal was submitted by teacher Melanie Calhoun. Students will leverage technology to plan, create, and publish e-textbooks for their subject areas. The goal is to develop electronic multi-media learning tools for existing and future students use, and enhance the learning process of the students who will write the books and produce multi-meidal items. Marchelo Maynor and Cristie Lester presented the check to Melanie at the May 5th board meeting. Congratulations Melanie!

American Chemical Society's National Chemistry Olympiad | On April 26th, 6 high school students from Sullivan County Schools participated in the second round of testing for the American Chemical Society's National Chemistry Olympiad. These students qualified by achieving the top scores at their school on the initial test. Round two consisted of full day of work. Students completed a multiple choice test, essay test, and then a laboratory practical.
The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad and the International Chemistry Olympiad are multi-tiered competitions that bring together the world's most talented high school students to test their knowledge and skills in chemistry. Nations around the world conduct examinations to nominate the most high-performing students for the International Chemistry Olympiad.
The students participating from Sullivan County were Matthew Torbett and Alisha Burnheimer from East High School, Makenna Smith and Jessee Tribble from North High School, as well as Luke Hiester and Jacob Thompson from South High School. Early this summer students will find out if they have qualified to go on to the next round which includes a two week camp at the Air Force Academy. The top four students from the camp will go on to compete in international competition in Hanoi, Vietnam in July.
