Sullivan East Art Students' Train Mural

Sullivan East High School Art Club students, led by art teachers Marcia Ross and Debra Brooks, completed a train mural on a twenty-five-foot high train trestle for a railroad bridge that once spanned the Holston River in Bluff City.  The old train trestle has long been the site of a painting depicting a steam engine coming out of a tunnel.  The Bluff City area was an important railway center during the Civil War.

The current painting is the third version of that scene, combining the colors and style of the previous works while changing the perspective of the tunnel and the details of the train.  The original was painted in the 1970's, with a second version painted by local artist Tim Cross some years later.

Bluff City Mayor Irene Wells requested that the painting be updated.  Under the direction of Marcia Ross and with the assistance of the water department staff and their equipment, the artists started painting in October and finished just before Christmas 2013.

Participating students were:  Hannah Tester, Megan Rowlette, Megan Booker, Alisha Burnheimer, Bryanna Shelby, Haley Carver, Ben Burgess and Grace Baker.

Sullivan South Student Presents Astronomy Paper to the Tennessee Junior Academy of Sciences

Sullivan South student Kayla Jenkins presented her scientific paper, The Age and Distance of the Open Cluster NGC 2126, before the Tennessee Junior Academy of Sciences at Belmont University in Nashville on Friday, April 25, 2014.  The Tennessee Junior Academy of Sciences (TJAS) is one of the oldest student science competition programs in the state and the nation. Since its inception in 1942 at the George Peabody College in Nashville, the TJAS objective has been to promote science education in Tennessee high schools by encouraging original scientific research by secondary school science students.

Data for Kayla's paper was collected with the 0.9-meter SARA telescope, located at the National Observatory at Kitt Peak, Arizona.  This was an extra-curricular project, involving many hours of work both after school and on weekends, since the project began this past Fall.    Kayla is one of South science teacher Tom Rutherford's independent research students.

A video of Kayla's presentation, along with those of the other student presenters, may be found at
