Walk a Mile in Someone Else's Shoes |
As part of the Genetics and Bioengineering unit, the eighth grade is once again going outside to the raised beds built during the Agriculture unit. Students are studying the Reconstruction Period in Social Studies and one of the effects of the Civil War was that many came back maimed and disabled in some way. The era depended on every able bodied person to help build back the country; however, those disabled often found themselves sidelined and unable to help. For this project the students will be working through the Engineering Design Process as they create gardening devices for individuals with disabilities. To give the students a first hand experience with their disability, they went to their raised beds and tried to plant seeds and water their gardens as an individual with a disability.
Through Science, students are studying genetics, natural selection, and disease mutations through genetic coding. It is in Science, as well, that students will discuss the Engineering Design Process that will drive the culminating project of designing and creating an accommodating device for someone with a disability. Math will support this unit by asking students to prove theorems about two-dimensional geometric figures within each of the adaptive or assistive products designed and created. Each proof will be tailored and designed to fit each particular group's product thus giving individuality and credibility to the mathematical theorems. In English/Language Arts, students will use their knowledge of Reconstruction (1865-1877) and develop a historical narrative based on that time period about someone who became disabled due to the Civil War and the obstacles that had to be overcome.

Congratulations to all who participated!
The Sullivan Central High School Key Club began pen pal correspondence with the fifth graders at Central Heights Elementary School. All twenty-seven children were paired with a Key Clubber who wrote them letters every two weeks, to which the fifth graders replied. This event was made even more special when the SCHS Key Club arranged a field trip to meet their pen pals on February 27. With ice cream and lots of pictures, everyone had a blast! These kinds of projects are really important to the future of our community because they give the younger generation role models to follow and a sneak peek at what their lives may be like several years from now.
