Mary Hughes 3rd Graders Sail Aboard the Titanic

Third grade students at Mary Hughes are setting sail aboard the Titanic.  As part of their extended text, they are reading Tonight on the Titanic, a Magic Treehouse book.  They are also using the accompanying Fact Tracker from the series to research facts about the tragedy.  Each student was given a real person's name that actually sailed on the Titanic.  We were able to incorporate several writing opportunities around the Titanic unit.  Adjectives and adverbs were also taught during this unit.  The students described the ship and we used adverbs to describe the reactions of the passengers on board.  The students loved climbing aboard the Titanic from the gangway each day.  We were able to engage all levels of readers as we worked in book clubs to answer complex questions from the story and study the facts about the ill-fated ship.  As the unit wraps, students will find out if they survived or not.
