Student Spotlight - Ruby Millican, Sullivan Central |
Last April I applied for a job in the LIBRIS department at Eastman. LIBRIS stands for Library and Information Services. There are four jobs available, three in the library and one in project engineering. Schools from around the area were allowed to send three students to apply at Eastman. Sullivan Central had more than three students wanting to apply, so I had to first apply at Central by making my first official resume. Once I passed that process I filled out an Eastman application and then had an interview set up with Eastman. Since this was a big interview I got help from my teachers and my parents. I found out a few weeks later that I had gotten the job in the library. There were many other applicants, and I think it's great that all four workers are Sullivan County students.
When making the decision to apply and then take the job I had to give up some of the activities I was involved in. Because I leave before fifth period and stay at work for four hours I could not participate in cross country, Track, or show choir. This was a very hard decision because I had been involved in cross country and track for three years, and I loved being involved in show choir. However, I thought taking the job would be a better decision for my future. I am still involved in Math Honors Society, Science Honors Society, National Honors Society, Beta Club, Natural Helpers, general choir, and the youth praise band at church.
I have three main responsibilities that I share with the two other students. The responsibilities are keeping up with the tasks in the Research Library, the tasks in the Business Library, and the proprietary requests. We rotate the different responsibilities each week, so we get a new start every week. In the Research and Business Libraries I check in mail and send it to employees around the company, checkout and discharge books, file books or journals on display or in storage, and complete other needed library tasks. My favorite job is taking care of proprietary requests. Proprietary requests are when employees want to read a restricted or confidential document, and it is my job to ask people above them if it is okay for them to read it. Once I get approval I send them the link to the document so that they can access and read the document.
This job has taught me many important things. How to act professionally in the work place and how to have a schedule every day are just two of the things. The most important thing I have learned is how a big company works. I have seen the transition from Eastman acquiring Solutia, and I have listened in on the third quarter financial results. It is interesting to see all of the parts work together. This will help me in my future, because one day I want to work at a company like Eastman as a chemical engineer. When I am done with my job, I will be attending the University of Tennessee Knoxville in the fall. |
Student Spotlight - Ashley Reynolds, Sullivan Central |
Last April I was given the opportunity to apply for a position at Eastman Chemical Company. After filling out the Eastman application, perfecting my resume, and going through an interview I got a call saying I got the job. On the first day I found out that I was going to be in the Project Engineering group- a group who does many different engineering projects to help make Eastman better. My duties in the group include printing assets tags so equipment can be easily found, scheduling meetings, making sure that capitol information gets entered into the correct databases, and assisting a technology specialist. I work twenty hours per week during school, and eight hour days when I am out of school.
On top of my job at Eastman I am a member of the varsity volleyball team at Sullivan Central. I also play travel volleyball for Northeast Tennessee Volleyball Club (NETVC). I am a member of many clubs at Central as well these clubs include: Beta Club, National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society, Anchor Club, and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). I also challenge myself academically by taking advanced placement, honors, and dual enrollment courses. I maintain a 4.0 grade point average. My future plans include attending King University to pursue a degree in forensic science.
Having this job at Eastman has taught me to do what is best for me even if sacrifice is necessary. I have really enjoyed being in this position, and have made contact with people I would have never known otherwise. I have also learned so much about how hard it is to hold a serious office job. I have enjoyed my internship and I am so thankful I was able to participate in it.

United States Presidential Scholars Program - Taylor Pinto |
Taylor Pinto, a student at Sullivan South High School, has been selected as a candidate for the United States Presidential Scholars Program.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating seniors. In 1979, the program was expanded to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts. Annuallly, up to 141 students are chosen from among outstanding graduating seniors to become U.S. Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.
Scholars are chosen on the basis of their accomplishments in many areas - academic and artistic success, leadership, and involvement in school and the community - and represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in America's youth. They are invited to Washington, DC in June to participate in National Recognition Program, which includes many enrichment activities and events and culminates with the presentation to the students of the Presidential Scholars Medallion during a ceremony sponsored by the White House.
Congratulations, Taylor! |

Mary Hughes 1st Annual Book Character Day Celebration |
Earlier this fall, the students at Mary Hughes participated in our 1st Annual Book Character Day Celebration. Students were encouraged to read a book of their choosing and dress up like a character from that book. The students were very creative with their costumes and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz book and characters shone through as a favorite choice! The students walked across the stage to show off their costume while Mrs. Sauls announced the title of the book they read. It was a wonderful day of celebrating literature. |
