Common Core Parent Night at Rock Springs Elementary

You're Invited

Please join us for our Common Core Parent Night at Rock Springs Elementary School on January 28, 2014, at 6:30 p.m.

Dr. Jared Bigham from Tennessee's State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE) will lead the session and answer questions from the audience about Tennessee's transition to the Common Core State Standards.  Dr. Bigham oversees support for successful implementation of Tennessee's sweeping reforms focused on preparing students for success beyond high school.  Before joining SCORE, Dr. Bigham was Supervising Principal of Copper Basin Schools in Polk County, Tennessee.  Dr. Bigham serves on Tennessee's Common Core Leadership Council, and he is the former Executive Director of the Tennessee Rural Education Association.
Holston Valley Middle School is EPIC!

Holston Valley Middle's EPIC Leadership Team sponsored a school-wide food drive during the month of December.  The entire student body either donated food items or made monetary donations.  We are so proud of the generosity shown by our students in their efforts to support the families in our community.

HVMS 7th Grade Math Project

Holston Valley Middle School seventh graders have been hard at work in Megan Blakely's math class.  The students have completed several hands-on activities and projects incorporating proportions and scale drawings.  Students used maps to calculate real-life distances between actual cities/landmarks in North Carolina and Tennessee.  Seventh graders also completed the Scale Drawing Unit with a Candy Wrapper Project.  Each student brought in a candy wrapper to measure, record the data, and scale up the dimensions to a larger scale factor.  The giant-sized candy wrapper was carefully drawn using the new scale factor and colored to resemble its original wrapper.

Bluff City Elementary Tacky Christmas Sweater Contest

The Bluff City Elementary staff participated in a tacky Christmas sweater contest.  The students were the judges and voted by using coins.  Each coin, regardless of value, counted as one vote and the students could vote for as many sweaters as they wanted.  The winning faculty member was asked to choose a charity to donate all the coins used in voting.  The winner was Bobbie Nave, second grade teacher, and she donated the $188.59 to St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Sullivan South JROTC
Sullivan South's Air Force JROTC Drill Team competed in the annual Daniel Boone High School Drill meet this past weekend.  They were among over 20 schools in attendance and the team proudly brought home a Second Place trophy in the Unarmed Squad category.  Their next competition is scheduled for early March in Greeneville, TN.
Student Completes Community Service Project at MPE

Andrew Ervin recently completed a community service project by spreading mulch on the playground at Miller Perry Elementary.  Andrew is working toward his next rank in the Boy Scouts with the ultimate goal of becoming an Eagle Scout.  Troop 252 is based in Fall Branch with scouts located in Colonial Heights and Rock Springs.  Scouting was founded on the premise of doing a Good Turn daily.  Community service is very important in the character-building process and as Scouts, we have made the commitment to give back to our communities.
