School Board Meeting Update 12-2-13  
  
 Special thanks to Sullivan Central and Sullivan South student's in Rhonda Flanary's Graphic Communication Class and Craig Haynie's Carpentry Class.  Students worked together to create an engraved desk set and business card holder along with business cards for board members and Dr. Yennie.

The following items were approved at tonight's Board Meeting: 

  •  Policy 5.310 Vacations and Holidays - Adoption on 3rd Reading
  •  Policy 3.400 Student Transportation Management - Approval on 2nd Reading
  • Policy 3.4001 Scheduling and Routing - Approval on 2nd Reading
  • Policy 6.314 Corporal Punishment - Approval on 2nd Reading
  • Policy 4.401 Textbooks - Approval on 2nd Reading

  • Federal Consolidated Application Amendment
  • New Program of Study at Sullivan North High School - Fire Management Services.  This class will be offered in the program of study for the 2014-2015 school year.  Principles of Fire Management Services - Enroll as a member of the Fire Cadet Academy at Sullivan North High School.  This class is in partnership with local fire departments and Sullivan County Schools.  This class provides an opportunity to obtain Firefighter 1 certification and is focused toward volunteer and career firefighters.  During this course, students will learn the basics of firefighting including pulling fire hose, climbing ladders, wearing air packs, properly wearing firefighter gear, Professional Rescuer CPR, and other firefighting tasks that can be performed at Sullivan North High School.  This course is open to fall 2014 11th graders.

  • Fund 141 and Fund 145 Budget Transfers
  • Resolution, Contract for Facility Planning Consultant - Motion:  To direct the executive committee of the Sullivan County Department of Education to negotiate a contract and fee with Red Chair Architects according to the specifications detailed in RFQ #E2013-MFEPP.  Further, the Executive Committee will bring a contract before the board for formal approval as soon as appropriate but no later than February 28, 2014.  Finally, the Director of Schools is authorized to invite the Kingsport City School Superintendent and the KCS Board of Education to collaborate with our comprehensive study to engage in the demographic planning, educational programs, or facility conditions portions of the study as deemed appropriate by both systems.  If KCS is willing to participate, the school system's executive committees will negotiate the cost of the comprehensive study with final approval by both school boards.
  • Resolution, Bus Transportation Resolution to Bid - Whereas, the Sullivan County Department of Education received notice from Holston Bus Company that the bus company will no longer provide bus transportation for Sullivan County students starting in August 2014, and Whereas, Sullivan County Department of Education has a contract with multiple student transportation providers; Therefore, be it resolved that the Director of Schools will engage legal council and county purchasing in a process to develop a request for proposal for bus transportation for the 2014-15 school year in accordance with our existing contract and applicable state and federal laws.
