| Bricks 4 Kidz Visits First Grade at Bluff City Elementary | |
First graders at Bluff City Elementary School got to experience making a turkey out of Legos while learning about the history of Thanksgiving. Bricks 4 Kidz use Legos to deliver hands-on lessons related to cross-disciplinary curriculum objectives. The Bricks 4 Kidz approach to learning is imaginative, multi-sensory and fun, creating a dynamic learning experiences for students. | Bluff City Elementary Students Participate in the 4H Public Speaking Contest | |
On December 10th, Bluff City Elementary 4th and 5th grade students participated in the 4H Public Speaking Contest at the Kingsport Center for Higher Education.The participants from Bluff City were: Ashton Pierson, Gracey Byrd, Emma Timbs, Bethany Willis, Ryland Love, Eden Phillips, Cayden Bawgus, Riley Skaggs, and Caleb Hale. The students not only presented exceptional speeches, but they also demonstrated excellent manners, proper etiquette, and amazing stage presence. Students, teachers, parents, and the 4H staff worked together to make this a night of great success and many, special memories.
Special congratulations goes out to Caleb Hale, who placed first in the fifth grade division. Caleb will move on to the next level of competition in February. Congratulations also goes out to Cayden Bawgus who placed third in the fifth grade division.

| Holston Valley Middle 8th Grade Science | |
Students in Mr. Buchanan's 8th grade Science class at Holston Valley Middle School try to determine how many paperclips would fit into a cup already full of water. This was an investigation of water's surface tension and part of learning about matter and properties. Later in the week, students had the opportunity to see water broken down into hydrogen and oxygen gas through electrolysis and then test the gases to confirm their identity as well.

| Sullivan South DECA Activities | |
New York City Trip
The DECA Marketing Club at Sullivan South has just returned from at trip to New York City on December 3-8, 2013. Thirty-two persons attended Marketing Seminars at Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden, Planet Hollywood, Madam Tussaud's Wax Museum, and SOHO Fashion Tours. The students also visited the Empire State Building, Trump Tower, the Broadway Play "Wicked", Times Square, Chinatown, and many more attractions. Approximately 130 persons have taken these trips to the center of the World of Marketing over the past 5 years.
Advertising Program for the Cafeteria
DECA developed an advertising program for the cafeteria at Sullivan South. The theme revolved around the cafeteria being able to provide larger portion sizes. Some of the winning posters were:
"Want MORE? Go through the lunch DOOR!"
"Feast your EYES upon the greater SIZE!"
"The Official Rebel Fuel" (A LARGE hamburger was pictured)
Food Bank Project
Twelve members of Sullivan South DECA recently participated in a Food Bank. We spent two hours bagging apples, cereal, and packing food boxes for families less fortunate in our community.

| CYBERPATRIOT | |
Cadets from Sullivan North High School have successfully completed the first stage of the Air Force Association CYBERPATRIOT competition. This is the fourth year North has participated in this competition which aims to train young men and women in cyber security. This is the premier online cyber security challenge with several hundred teams from across the world participating. The top teams will be invited to Washington DC in June for a side by side challenge. By participating in the first phase, Cadets were awarded a carrying bag, t-shirt, challenge coin and certificate of participation. |
| NJROTC Flight Orientation | |
Cadets from the Sullivan North High School Naval Junior Reserve Offiers Training Corp (NJROTC) unit recently participated in a flight demonstration and orientation flight at Tri Cities Airport. Each participating cadet was allowed to fly on an orientation flight for 15 to 20 minutes and experience take off, landing and a brief moment of Zero Gravity. Also, participating in this event was seven of our seniors - many for their first flight experience.

| Bluff City Middle Technology Student Association | |
The Bluff City Middle School Technology Student Association club competed in the Northeast TN Regional TSA competition held on Dec. 3rd. at ITT Tech in Johnson City.
They earned seven total awards, including first place in the Structural Engineering and Dragster Design MS competitions.

IA 8th Graders Using SketchUp in Multi-Media for "Canstruction" | |
8th grade students at Innovation Academy are currently working on a service-learning project for the Modern Living STEM Curricular Unit. The transdisciplinary unit of Modern Living will educate the students in the relationships between the Industrial Revolution and the modern day comforts afforded to us today. Students will be able to apply their understanding of the engineering design process to the historic importance of inventions through the different eras and make a connection and comparison with inventions of today. Students have been working on their design in Multi-Media using SketchUp to create a 3 dimensional drawing of their canstruction. Students had to create their drawing using the correct measurements so they could plan out how many cans they would need for their canstruction. Next week, using canned goods, students will construct an invention from their design that originated during the Industrial Revolution. Size and color of the label of the canned goods will be the defining characteristics of the chosen invention to construct. The altruistic connection to our community is that the canned goods will be donated to an area food bank after the construction and the presentation to the parents and community.
