The Glad Hatter Project |
The Glad Hatter project was a perfect fit for Mrs. Flanary's Graphic Design class. The goal was to make fleece hats with real hair sewn in them for children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Everyone had a hand in the making of the hats. Some people cut out fabric and pinned on patches or hair. Others embroidered the patches-with the Glad Hatter logo-or sewed the hats together. Mrs. Putney's Cosmetology class lent a hand in giving the hats a haircut. At the completion of the project Mrs. Flan's class made twenty-five hats with real hair to give to donate to young cancer patients. Her students cannot be stopped in their mission to make more hats so that every child at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital can have a hat with hair to wear. They plan to continue making as many hats as they can to create as many smiles as possible.
Children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital lose their hair everyday due to chemo treatments for cancer. The pain that is accompanied with cancer must be hard enough, but losing all their hair on top of that horrific pain must be devastating. Through the works of the Glad Hatter project, children will be able to put on their fleece toboggan and have some hair on their head to look at in the mirror. Self-esteem is very important when going through hard situations such as cancer, so the mission of the Glad Hatter project is to put a smile on each child's face one hat at a time.
