Sullivan South High School Theater Arts will be presenting the children's play, The Ugly Duckling Princess, on Sunday, November 3, 2013.  The doors of the Little Theater will open at 1:45 p.m. and the show will begin at 2:30 p.m.  All tickets will be sold at the door and the cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students.  This is a funny and entertaining show that is perfect for all ages.  We hope everyone will be able to attend.  If you have any questions, please contact Laura Roller at laura.roller@sullivank12.net.

Sullivan Central High School students participated in the first school-wide homecoming food drive for Central Zone families.  The food drive was organized by Mrs. Allison Marino and the Central Key Club as a part of week long homecoming festivities.  With assistance from the Key Club, the student body of SCHS collected over 2,600 food items with enough food to create 75 food baskets for families in our community.  Some of this food will be donated to local churches to stock their food pantries for the upcoming holiday season and much of it will be immediately distributed to families in need.  The Key Club and student body of Sullivan Central High School is already planning to beat this year's 2,600 items by at least 1,000 items next year!  Sullivan Central is extremely proud of the efforts of our student body for making this first "annual" homecoming food drive a great success!    

The Holston Elementary community is simply phenomenal.  Holston Elementary and the community have come together to help support one of our own as he battles cancer at St. Judes.  We had a benefit dinner on October 7th.  The outpouring of love and support was amazing.  The donations, volunteers, and participants went above and beyond to make this event very successful.  We have also had T-shirt sales and other ways to donate and support this sweet boy.  Please continue to keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Blountville Elementary Career Day

Sullivan Central High School Culinary Arts competed in the Battle of the Batter sponsored by the American Cancer Society.  The competition was held at The Charles in Johnson City, TN.  The students that competed on the team were Tori Lester and Brittany Milhorn along with their instructor, Chef Angel Welch.  The students competed in four categories: 

• Best ACS 100th Birthday Inspired Cupcake - Think Traditional Favorites
• Most Original Cupcake Awarded for the Most Creative Flavor Profile
• Best Filled Cupcake with Filling or Treats Inside
• Most Creative Themed Cupcake Focus on Fall and/or Halloween Decorations

These students took first place in all categories in their division.  They were also judged in the professional division and won first place in the Most Creative Themed category with their cupcake "Spaghetti and Eyeballs".

Central Heights 4th Graders attended the Celebration of Chemistry

for 4th Graders

 Central Heights fourth grade students attended National Chemistry Week's "Celebration of Chemistry for Fourth Graders".  This event was held at Eastman Chemical Company.  Students watched and participated in chemistry demonstrations.  They also were treated to a presentation of "The Magic of Chemistry" by Radcliffe University College of Chemistry.  It was a wonderful day that brought chemistry to life!  

During their Agriculture Unit, 6th grade students at Innovation Academy learned about landscape design and architecture.  STEM professionals from the landscape industry spoke to IA students during STEM week earlier this school year and did a demonstration of the software they used called Google SketchUp.  This week, IA students created their own 3 dimensional landscape drawing using Google SketchUp in Multi Media.  Students were able to apply concepts they had learned in their academic classes and create a professional 3 dimensional model to present at the conclusion of the unit. 

Miller Perry 5th grade students explored habitats, species adaptations, and effects of human impact on the environment, when they visited Warriors Path State Park.

Sullivan County Schools was invited to visit the Institute for Aerospace Education in Frankfort, KY during fall break.  Bill Powley, Bo Shadden, and Jubal Yennie flew to Capitol City Airport in Frankfort with Advanced Flight Training's owner Beverly Barnett.  The group toured the program and the high school to learn more about the Institute and how the Kentucky network extends STEM education for high school students by emphasizing the aerospace industry.  The Institute provides resources and instructional materials for member schools.
