Band Competition Winners
This last Saturday at Davy Crockett High School started the band competition season for many schools in this region.  There were a total of 15 bands at this competition, but there were 3 to be recognized here:  Sullivan South, Sullivan Central and Science Hill.  The final scores of the day were 1st place - Sullivan South with a 93.00, 2nd place - Sullivan Central with a 92.67, and 3rd place - Science Hill with a 90.33.  This is the FIRST TIME in both of these Sullivan County Schools history that their band have defeated the Science Hill High School Band.  And, they both did it on the same day!  Both schools need to be very proud of their band programs, as this a feat to defeat a program that has a school size almost 3 times bigger than our schools.
Mary Hughes Fall Festival

On Saturday, September 28, Mary Hughes School celebrated its annual Fall Festival.  Every year this event is held by the MHS PTSA to help supplement various programs at the school.  The festival is organized and run by the parents, teachers, administrators and students of Mary Hughes and supported by our community as a whole.  The students enjoyed hayrides, inflatables, a haunted dungeon and games.  Several community businesses donated items for the live auction which successfully brought in thousands of dollars to help support our school. This event has become a favorite of the community:  filled with fun and food, this tradition brings us together as a "family" to celebrate the season and show our MHS pride.

Mary Hughes Receives Outdoor Garden Mini-Grant from Sullivan County Farm Bureau

Mary Hughes received the Outdoor Garden Mini-Grant from Sullivan County Farm Bureau. Melissa Boyd, third grade teacher accepts a check from Farm Bureau President Robert Earhart and Sheila Earhart, Women's Chairman of the Sullivan County Farm Bureau.

The grant is designed for teachers to teach students that agriculture is an integral part of our everyday environment.  The garden will be located at Mary Hughes and developed by the enitre Mary Hughes Community.  The garden grant will fund production of garden vegetables and herbs.  We plan to expand the garden with flowers, trees, bushes and herbs. Mary Hughes faculty, parents, students, the Historical Society and community members will join together and work on the development of the garden. The garden will be named after Shelby McCamy.

Heritage Day at Bluff City Middle

Over the last few years, Bluff City Middle School has conducted its annual Heritage Day to coincide with the commemoration of The Overmountain Victory Trail and subsequent victory at King's Mountain South Carolina in 1780. This critical victory was won by a group of farmers, gentlemen, hunters, all from Virginia, what is now East Tennessee, and from the Carolina's. This victory set off a chain of positive events in the South that eventually pushed Cornwallis and the British out of the South to Virginia where they were trapped and defeated by Gen. George Washington and our French allies.

Every year members seek to reenact the Victory Trail, a portion of which runs through the middle of our own Bluff City Middle School. Members of the OVTA association come and tell the story that is essential to keep alive in this area and across this nation. They provide story-telling and demonstrations that cannot be created in a history book. We have completed the Trail dedication here, students marched down to the bridge one year to commemorate the dedication of "Choate's Ford". Every year we have a poster, model, and essay contest. This year the 8th grade winners were Kayla Henry in the model contest, Seth Gilstrap for the Essay contest, and Nicholas Moody for the Poster contest.

Thomas Jefferson called it, "The turn of the tide of success." referring to this battle and the campaign in the south, and eventual American Independence! We are so blessed here at Bluff City Middle School for our students to have not only the chance to learn from history, but to touch it as well!

WTFM Teacher of the Month - Rhonda Fields, Weaver Elementary

Steve Mann from WTFM radio presented Rhonda Fields, 3rd grade teacher at Weaver Elementary School, the award of being their Teacher of the Month.  Mrs. Fields had been nominated by one her students' mother and WTFM agreed that Mrs. Fields deserved to be recognized.  Mrs. Fields was presented with a nice plaque and several gift certificates.  Mrs. Fields is an excellent choice for this type of honor and her students will tell you the same.  Congratulations!

What's Happening at Holston Elementary?

Mrs. Moriarty's Kindergarten Class has been busy learning about the seasons.  They enjoyed going on a nature walk and looking for beautiful autumn leaves.  Then they sorted them by shape, color, and size.  They have also enjoyed reading books and looking at pictures about the different seasons.  Learning is FUN in Mrs. Moriarty's class!

Mr. Kincheloe's 2nd Grade Class has been learning about shelter. This sparked a class project at playtime.  They gathered sticks to make a tee-pee, a fire pit, and to mark off a garden plot.  4th grade social studies is going to collaborate with Mr. Kincheloe's class to discuss the types of shelter the Native Americans may have built.

NJROTC Cadets Teach Kindergarten Students

Several NJROTC cadets from Sullivan North recently participated in a Junior Achievement program to teach kindergarten students at Ketron Elementary School.  Select cadets worked each day for a week teaching these young students.  Each lesson consisted of reading a story and helping with a craft or activity.
