Bring Common Core Standards to Life

One of the new common core standards for Language Arts involves "Speaking and Listening" in which students engage in meaningful and creative dialogue about the text they are reading. One of Mr. Humphrey's 7th grade Reading classes did this during class on Friday, September 6th. After reading "A Retrieved Reformation" by O'Henry to look at how point-of-view affects how a story is told, the students prepared a mock trial to take their own point-of-view on whether or not the main character, Jimmy Valentine, should have returned to prison after committing more safe cracking crimes upon his release. He was pardoned by detective Ben Price because he cracked a safe to save the life of his future niece Agatha Adams. Students assumed the roles witnesses, judge, court reporter and prosecuting and defense attorney to show through use of evidence from the text whether or not Jimmy should have been forgiven for his crimes or been sent back to jail. After completing the mock trial, a jury of remaining classmates agreed that he indeed deserved a second chance at freedom.

The following class period, students were treated to a movie version of the story entitled MY DEAR RALPH which was directed and produced by a local amateur film maker named Benjamin Dawson. Benjamin visited Mr. Humphrey's classes to engage in a meaningful discussion about the film and how it helped tell the stories in ways that the written story could not. This allowed the students to understand another important common core standard, RL.7.7 - how the media version of a story uses unique elements like sound, lighting and camera angles to tell a version of a story.

The Sullivan North High School Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp (NJROTC) participated in the Duck Island Orienteering competition hosted by Volunteer High School on Saturday, September 14.  This event was strictly for practice and team members were not eligible to place in the event due to the novice status of the competition.  Members from North that participated were Tristin Quillen, Daniel Bishop, Jaron Estep and Michael Broughton.  Cadet Estep navigated the course in just over 20 minutes and was the first to finish.
