Miller Perry 5th Graders Visit Battle of Blountville |
On Friday, September 6, the fifth graders from Miller Perry Elementary had the opportunity to visit the Battle of Blountville reenactment site. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Abe Lincoln and Robert E. Lee. We rotated through various stations, each one set up to be as authentic as possible and manned by an era clad storyteller/historian who told us little known facts. We were able to see a cannon fired as well as watch "slaughtering" practice. We learned a lot and several of the students went back the following day to watch the actual reenactment.

Innovation Academy News |
STEM I classes are also being offered to eighth graders this year. For the first nine weeks, professionals from Eastman Chemical Company, Wellmont, and E.T.S.U. are providing students with the opportunity to fully pursue investigations around STEM topics. The three project-based learning experiences for the current nine weeks will engage students in experiments regarding energy consumption, drug potency, and 'bear hunting' tardigrades, a microscopic invertebrate. Students will have opportunities to plan and explore real-world problems and challenges while working side-by-side with true STEM professionals. |

National Guard BMX Team Visits Sullivan North |
The National Guard BMX touring demonstration visited Sullivan North recently. The team of three professional bike riders performed for the high school and middle school for approximately 45 minutes. The high stress performance was concluded with a jump on the ground over eight individuals including six students. The highlight of the morning was a jump over the head of one of our own teachers - Brittany Moore. While the program was certainly entertaining for the students and faculty, the message was clear - you can do what you want and be what you want by putting forth the effort. Do something with your life, plan ahead and do your best. |
Sullivan East High School Receives Grant | Sullivan East High School has received a MacBook Learning Lab through the Niswonger Foundation i3 Investing in Innovation Grant. The more than $23,000 received from this grant award comes from the U.S. Department of Education and matching funds from the Niswonger Foundation to ensure that students in the Upper East Tennessee region graduate from high school prepared for college and career. The Northeast Tennessee College and Career Ready Consortium (NETCO) evaluates grant proposals from schools within the 15 participating school districts. Proposals must provide a need that will support high school students, especially those from under-represented populations, by ensuring they will graduate college ready and career ready, and improving the likelihood of successfully completing college. According to Sheri Nelson, Project Manager of the grant proposal, "Many of our students do not have technology or internet access at home, making online educational classes, AP classes, and college and career planning difficult. The mobile learning lab gives us more options and tools to supply the students with an education that reflects the instructional skills needed to be productive higher education students or participants in the work force, and supports our long-term goal to be one-to-one with computers and/or iPads in the classroom." |
Weaver Elementary Hosts Clean-Up Day | On Saturday, September 6, Weaver Elementary held a school clean-up day. Several parents, students, and staff came out to improve the school campus by spreading mulch on the playgrounds, pressure washing the front of the school and the modular buildings, weatherproofing picnic tables, trimming trees and underbrush, and planting trees. Due to the strong turnout, everything on the to-do list was easily accomplished, making the school grounds look great! Future plans include an inside clean-up day within the next few months. |
