Six Sullivan County Educators attended the ETSU Basic Aerospace Workshop |
Educators from across East Tennessee, including six from Sullivan County attended East Tennessee State University's 38th Annual Basic Aerospace Education Workshop on June 3-21, 2013. Each teacher received a $1,5000 scholarship which included tuition for three hours of graduate credit, a $100 expense stipend, field trip expenses and an orientation flight in a private aircraft.
The workshop featured many "hands-on" activities in rocketry, astronomy, flight experimentation and other areas. In one project, participants built a glider or paper aircraft that was tested in the ETSU Mini-Dome for distance and duration of flight. In another project, teachers created a rocket and launched it with an "egg-stronaunt" inside. The activities provided insight into lessons that will better engage and inspire their students.
Guest lecturers provided an additional component to the training. Ed Lockett, aerospace scholar, artist and model builder, discussed the history of aerospace from the Wright brothers to the modern day spacecraft. Ms. Beverly Barnett, owner and operator of Advanced Flight at the Tri-City Airport, covered ground school topics such as aerodynamics, weather effects on flight, parts of a plane and aviation technology. Ms. Barnett offered each teacher one hour of flight time at her school. NASA Education Specialist, John Weiss covered several topics: Mars rovers, Exploration Design Challenge, Space Station and robotics. His lecture included several simulation activities which the teachers can recreate with their students.
Field trips were taken to the FAA tower and radar room, Bays Mountain Planetarium, Bell Helicopter, and Tennessee Museum of Aviation. The major field trip landed the group in Tullahoma, TN with a tour of Arnold Engineering and then to Huntsville, Alabama to Marshall Space Flight Center, Davidson Center for Space Exploration and Redstone Arsenal. While visiting Redstone, the tour group was surprised with a greeting by Jackie Dannenburg, wife of Konrad Dannenburg who was an original member of Von Braun's team. Since her husband's passing, Mrs. Dannenburg volunteers as a guide at Redstone. The tour ended with a trip to the NASA resource room, where teachers were given classroom materials.
The Aerospace Workshop gave meaningful S.T.E.M experiences and materials to Angie Sybert & Melissa Shelton (Ketron Elementary), Michele Harbough, Melissa Boyd & Debbie Thomas (Mary Hughes) and Renea Hyder (Holston Middle), which they can offer to the children in their schools. |
Miller Perry Fifth Graders show EPIC Behavior |
Students from Mrs. Zimmerman and Mrs. Burdine's 5th grade classes worked together to brainstorm appropriate EPIC behavior rules for carpool, bus, cafeteria, hallway, bathroom, and the playground. Students made posters with the rules and wrote a scipt to act out those rules. Some of the students' videos are posted on Mrs. Zimmerman's class website here. |
