Sullivan South Students, Teacher, visit Caltech as Part of Astronomy Research Project |
Sullivan South students Peyton Nanney, Wes Cox, and their teacher, Tom Rutherford, traveled to Caltech in mid-July as participants in the NASA/IPAC Teacher Archive Research Project (NITARP). This program has students and their teachers work as part of a research team on a specific project using archived data, in this case data from the GALEX satellite and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Other teacher/ student teams in the group are from Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin. They are working under the direction of Caltech/JPL astronomer Dr. Varoujan Gorjian. The research group is attempting to find a way to predict the distances to certain active galaxies by examining their brightnesses in the infrared and in the ultraviolet. Also participating from South are students Matthew Boyd and Luke Hiester, who will help present the group's results at the American Astronomical Society conference in Washington, DC., in January. In addition, the group also visited the Griffith Observatory and the campus of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
