Colonial Heights Middle Stem Students Redesign Grocery Carts for Safety
| Colonial Heights Middle School students Aaron Watterson and Jacob Housewright were given a task of redesigning a shopping cart. They read a report from the American Association of Pediatrics that stated 24,000 children between the ages of new born to 15 were killed or severely injured each year in shopping cart accidents. The students researched different products and found a product called micro lattice that has a volume that is 99.9 percent lighter than air. They came up with the idea o wrapping that in carbon fiber tubing which decreased the weight of the shopping cart from an average of 62 pounds to 18 pounds. Their pitch was this would lower the impact on children if the cart tipped over on top of them. This also would keep the same size and shape so people could still fit all the groceries they need in shopping cart
Aaron and Jacob presented their redesign to the the class using their IPad connected to the Apple TV. The students included a video on micro lattice and carbon fiber along with a scale drawing of their prototype in their sales presentation.
