Innovation Academy Accepting Enrollment for 2013-2014 School Year Starting April 19 |
Innovation Academy, a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) middle school jointly operated by Sullivan County Schools and Kingsport City Schools will release 2013-14 Enrollment Applications on Friday, April 19, 2013. Applications will be accepted from all interested Kingsport City or Sullivan County students entering 6th, 7th or 8th grade in August 2013. Application forms will be sent home with all current 5th, 6th and 7th grade students on Friday, April 19. An online application will also be available at www.ianetn.org. Applications from all interested students will be due by Friday, May 24, 2013.
Innovation Academy will serve 80 students per grade level in 2013-14, split evenly between Kingsport and Sullivan County students. If more applications are received than positions available, a random drawing will be held to select students from all applications received by the May 24 deadline.
Started in 2012, Innovation Academy is a unique partnership betweenSullivan County Schools and Kingsport City Schoolsfocusing on the STEM curriculum areas. Students work and learn in a project-based environment, with multiple subjects and learning areas integrated in real-world projects.
Supported by the ETSU Northeast Tennessee Stem Innovation Hub, Eastman Chemical Company and Domtar, student learning is supported by area STEM experts who bring real-world expertise to Innovation Academy classrooms.

Author Michael Shoulders Visits Rock Springs Elementary
|
On March 27th, Rock Springs Elementary students enjoyed a visit from children's nonfiction author, Michael Shoulders. The students were entertained with jokes, singing, and magic, and they were inspired and encouraged to work hard and reach for their dreams. The 5th grade student council got the pleasure of having lunch with Mr. Shoulders. The students at Rock Springs enjoyed this great experience!

Smoky Mountains Regional Robotics Competition |  Sullivan North and Sullivan South participated in the Smoky Mountains Regional Robotics Competition March 28-30. The event took place in Knoxville and involved 50 teams from around the country including Canada and four other teams from North East Tennessee - Dobyns Bennett, Tennessee High, Science Hill and Cherokee. The theme for this years event was Ultimate Ascent and involved designing, building and fielding a robot capable of either shooting frisbees, climbing a pyramid or both. Teams were pitted with other teams in either a blue or red alliance. In the qualifying rounds, Sullivan North qualified 16th and Sullivan South qualilfied 22nd. The highest standing 8 schools after qualifying are able to choose alliances for the elimination matches. Sullivan South was chosen as part of an elimination alliance and were able to compete through the semi finals. Sullivan North was not selected for an elimination alliance but were chosen as a standby participant in case equipment malfunctions precluded a selected team from participation. Lead mentors for Sullivan North were Mr. Art Smith and CDR Wilmoth and the lead mentor for Sullivan South was Mr. Tim Lawson. Pictured in the accompanying photographs include a successful climb by the Robo Raider to the third level, the Robo Raiders team and a combined photograph of the Rebels and Robo Raiders. Both teams represented Sullivan County well in this event and both are proud of their individual accomplishments.  |
Blountville Elementary "Night of the Arts"
| On March 26th Blountville Elementary had their first "Night of the Arts." During the evening, attendees were able to view students' art work and haiku poems, create their own work of art with special guest Kathy Gibian, Director of Education at the William King Museum in Abingdon, and enjoy a performance of "Annie" and a recorder concert. The evening concluded with a reception of cookies and punch. Pam Hagy turned the school into an art gallery displaying work done by every student in the school. Frankie Odiorne directed the 4th grade's performance of "Annie" and the 5th grade's recorder concert, while Carol Carmack instructed the students on writing their own haiku poems. Faculty and parents worked together to make this a successful event.

Sullivan North NJROTC Promotions

The Sullivan North High School Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp (NJROTC) is proud to announce the promotion of Cadet Jaron Estep and Cadet Jimmy Rhoten to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Cadet Estep is currently assigned as the unit Assistant Operations Officer and Cadet Rhoten is currently assigned as the Unit Color Guard Commander. In addition to the above promotions, cadet's third class McKenzie Keeton, Seth Strickler and Caleb Hance were meritoriously promoted to the rank of second class petty officer. These promotions reflect a continued confidence in each of these young men's abilities as leaders in the JROTC program and a reflection in the units of their future leadership skills.
