Central Heights Promotes Healthy Choices Through Smoothie Program

Central Heights Elementary received a Fuel Up to Play 60 Grant.  Fuel Up to Play 60 is a program founded by the National Dairy Council and NFL, in collaboration with USDA, that encourages healthy eating and physical activity.  With the grant, Central Heights has purchased smoothie makers, food for taste-testing and pedometers.  The grant allows the school to make various types of smoothies for the children to sample.  The most recent smoothie the children tasted was a pineapple-apple smoothie.  Click here for more information on Fuel Up to Play 60

Dr. David Timbs Completes Prospective
Superintendents Academy
Assistant Director of Schools Dr. David Timbs recently completed the 2012-13 Prospective Superintendents Academy.   This academy provides 16 days of training designed to help those with experience in education, business, military, or public service acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to manage a school system.  Top educational leaders from across Tennessee taught the courses which covered subjects including school finance, school law, board relations, technology, personnel, and facilities management.

Second Harvest Mobile Food Pantry Serving our North Zone

The North Zone Second Harvest Mobile Food Pantry started in October. This program is a method of direct food distribution in an organized format that utilizes a dry/refrigerated vehicle to provide food to people in need. Nutritious fresh foods (such as such as milk, juice, bread and fresh produce)and non-perishable groceries are distributed.

The mobile food pantry is held once a month in the parking lot of Bloomingdale Baptist Church. Over the past 4 months, this program has served over 169 households, 618 individuals, and 294 children. There are plans to continue this program through the summer months.

If I Had A Hammer Builds - 5th Graders Learning Math Hands-On by Building Houses

All fifth grade students in Sullivan County will have the opportunity to participate in the If I Had A Hammer house build.  Students have been traveling to Northeast State Technical Community College to build a real house large enough for their entire class to fit inside.  Each build takes approximately two hours and helps students apply the concepts of math, create plans, and set goals.  Students have also been touring the Northeast State campus and learning more about college life.  Below are pictures from some builds that have already been completed.  More students will participate throughout the year.  Click here for more information on If I Had A Hammer
