Sparky and Firefighter Barry Visit Ketron Elementary

Former Ketron student and current Kingsport City Fire Department Public Safety Officer, Barry Brickey visited Ketron Elementary School on Friday, February 22nd.  Fireman Barry and his sidekick Sparky the Fire Dog demonstrated safe ways of leaving a burning building and reinforced the importance of a family evacuation plan.

Fireman Barry told the students that because of their efforts as members of his fire safety crew, Kingsport has not lost a life in a fire in over six years. He showed the students a video on fire safety in the home. Later he took the more than 300 first through third graders to the gym floor where they practiced crawling out of their home and meeting at a predetermined safe place.

Third grade teacher, Cathy Anderson and a first grade volunteer competed to determine who could dress as fast a firefighter. Officer Brickey gave each competitor real gear - boots, pants, coat and hat. He explained that firefighters must be ready to protect citizens and their homes in a moments notice. Mrs. Anderson graciously accepted defeat by our future fighter.

The students cheered as Firefighter Brickey, who is the national voice of Sparky the Fire Dog, called out his companion. The robotic Sparky reinforced the day's lessons while entertaining the students. KES students and staff are thankful to second grade teacher, Mrs. Catherine Whitson, for coordinating this event.

Holston Elementary STEM Projects

Ms. Barker's pre-k class uses STEM time to explore measuring and observing mixtures.

Fifth grade students are designing and building bridges that will later be tested for strength. The students used the provided grid paper to draw and measure their designs. These blueprints were used to by the students during building as a template.

Kindergarten has lots of centers and materials to explore during STEM. This student is putting many of his kindergarten skills and one of our lab kits to create a LEGO based friction sled.

All materials are not created equal. Second grade students observe and compare the properties of different materials. After they explored with the materials they recorded their observations and later discussed possible uses of different materials based on their physical properties.

Sullivan County Spelling Bee

The 2013 Sullivan County Spelling Bee was held on Thursday, February 21st at 6:30p.m. in the Sullivan Central Auditorium. 22 students from 8 county schools competed for this year's top 3 prizes with the blue ribbon winner being declared "2013 Sullivan County Spelling Bee Champion". The competition was fierce and after 45 minutes of Spelling, nine competitors still remained. After a couple of rounds of much more challenging words, the Bee came down to four excellent spellers. During this first championship round, all but 1 speller misspelled their words but this young 6th grader failed to spell the championship word, "attenuate". So, championship round #2 began anew with the same result. This time, 6th grader Matthew Barnicki from the Innovation Academy, successfully spelled the championship word, "dormition" meaning "death resembling falling asleep". After Matthew took the title, a short competition was held to determine the 2nd and 3rd place participants. Jace Lyon, an 8th grader at Bluff City Middle School narrowly edged out 3rd place finisher, 7th grader Luke Fox from Blountville Middle School by correctly spelling in a row, "celerity" and "usurious". Scarlett Edmunds from Colonial Heights Middle was an Honorable Mention as the 4th place finisher in the Bee. Matthew, along with all the other school champions, will be representing their schools in the Regional Spelling Bee in Knoxville on Saturday, March 16th.
