Miller Perry Fifth Graders Display Creativity while Learning about Westward Expansion

Fifth Graders in Ms. Burdine's class at Miller Perry Elementary were given the opportunity to show their creativity in the form of final projects and presentations to end a social studies unit on westward expansion.  Students presented their knowledge to the class in a variety of ways including powerpoint presentations, dioramas, posters, and several chose to construct covered wagons.  All students did an excellent job!

Sullivan Central Students Create Persuasive Commercials

Students from Sullivan Central in Mrs. Shelly Martin's English 10 classes were charged with creating a persuasive commercial that included at least three persuasive devices or logical fallacies that had been discussed in class.  The groups of three to five students used their new Dell Laptops provided by textbook allotment funds and Windows Movie Maker to layout and design the commercials.  The students had a blast writing the scripts and learning to use Movie Maker to create a commercial that was both interesting to view and persuasive in nature.

Junior Chef Contest at Emmett Elementary

Emmett cafeteria is sponsoring a Junior Chef contest during the month of February. The purpose of the contest is to promote School Lunch as well as to give selected students the opportunity to work in the cafeteria for a period of one week, dishing up trays and serving meals to the students. One individual is selected from a pool of students who have eaten lunch in the cafeteria every day that week. The winning Chef is chosen by Emmett Principal Robin McClellan, who draws one name at random.

The winner then gets the opportunity to work with School Nutrition Manager Judy Guffey and her staff. Mrs. Guffey gives each winner lessons in hand washing, sanitation, and the importance of wearing a hair restraint and plastic gloves.

The first Junior Chef chosen was Raven, a student in Ms. Bruce's 4th grade class. Raven served a meal which consisted of a Grilled Cheese or a PB & J Sandwich, Tomato Soup, Tater Tots, Fruit Juice, and Milk.  Raven did a great job; her specialty was dishing out a smile with every meal!

Sullivan North Teacher Kisses Pig for Student Council Fundraiser

The Sullivan North Student Council recently sponsored a fund raising event to collect funds for spring Student Council activities.  This event involved 28 teachers volunteering to kiss a pig at the end of the event based on the teacher earning the most votes by the student body.   Each penny donated equated to one vote.  The event ran for two weeks with the top 10 being determined after the first week and the winner being selected from this group.  Mr. Brian Upshaw was the lucky teacher - voted by our students to kiss the pig.  Bella, the pig, was cooperative throughout this process.  Mr. Upshaw and each of the remaining teachers are commended for their spirit of cooperation and willingness to be part of this event.
