Blountville Elementary Teacher Kyle Loudermilk named Reward School Ambassador

Kyle Loudermilk of Blountville Elementary school was one of fifteen teachers in Tennessee who were named to the Reward Schools Ambassador Program.  Each ambassador comes from a 2012 reward school, the top ten percent of schools in Tennessee for performance and progress, and will work with neighboring schools in each region to improve student achievement and reduce achievement gaps.  Blountville Elementary school will receive $20,000 in flexible funding because Mr. Loudermilk was chosen as an ambassador.

Other Sullivan County teachers and administrators will be working with the state implementation of Common Core Standards.  Assistant Director of Schools Dr. David Timbs will serve as First Tennessee's representative on the State Common Core Council as well as a Common Core Leadership Coach.  Bluff City Elementary Principal Cathy Nester is also serving as a Common Core Leadership Coach.  Bluff City Elementary fourth grade teacher Celeste Pridemore has been selected as an ELA Common Core Coach and Elementary Math Coach Beth Gilbert has been selected as a Math Common Core Coach.

Miller Perry Girls on the Run Make the Blue Pinky Promise against Bullying

Miller Perry Elementary Girls on the Run program began this week by talking about high expectations.  Girls in the program were encouraged to be leaders at school and chose to focus on standing up against bullying.  The girls watched an anti-bullying campaign video launched by the deodorant company Secret titled "Mean Stinks."  Part of the Mean Stinks campaign is the Blue Pinky Promise where girls promise to stand up against bullying together.  The color blue stands for hope.  The Miller Perry Girls on the Run team made the Blue Pinky Promise and symbolized it by painting their pinky fingers blue.  For more information about the campaign, please visit https:/meanstinks.com.  For more information on the Girls on the Run program, please visit http://www.girlsontherun.org/

Sullivan South teacher Thomas Rutherford's Scientific Paper Published in the Journal of the AAVSO
Sullivan South Teacher Thomas Rutherford has had a scientific paper published in the Journal of the American Association of Variable Star Observers.  The paper is entitled "Small Telescope Infrared Photometry of the Epsilon Aurgae Eclipse.  The abstract of the article may be found here:

Epsilon Aurigae is a star located about 2000 light years from the earth.  Every 27 years, it is eclipsed by an object whose nature is not completely known.  The object is so large that each eclipse lasts for 2 years.  The most current ideas are that the eclipsing object is a large disk of gas and dust that is approximately the size of Saturn's orbit around the sun.  Mr. Rutherford started collecting data in late 2008-- the eclipse began in August 2009 and  lasted until August 2011.  He has spent most clear nights for the last four years collecting data on the star.

Sullivan South AFJROTC Places First in National Rehobeth ASVAB Test

In November, Sullivan South took the National Rehobeth ASVAB test, sponsored by a naval unit in Alabama. Sullivan South had three teams of five people and took first, third, and sixth place. Cadets Sam Johnson and Ben Firth were first and second in the nation with scores of 76 and 74 respectively. Theparticipants met during second period for several weeks to study for the test. The test was one hundred questions about math, vocabulary, automotive, reading, science, and other assorted subjects. The test was timed and we had one hour to finish it.

Sullivan South has a very strong history in the Rehobeth Competition. There are trophies for the top three places. We have taken first place six yearsout of ten, first and second place three years in a row, and third place three times. Our best year was 2006-2007, when we took first, second, and fourth place. Individually, the cadets have also excelled, taking the top six scores in the nation in 03-04, and in 05-06, top seven scores in 06-07, top three in 11-12,and top two this year.
