Indian Springs 4th Graders Participate in 4-H Public Speaking Contest

Indian Springs Elementary teachers, principal, and parents were so proud of the 4th graders who participated on December 6 in the 4-H Public Speaking contest. Our judges were impressed by the number of students wishing to speak and the quality of their speeches.

Reilly Wells and Lily Perdue represented Indian Springs Elementary, 4th grade, in the Sullivan County 4-H Public Speaking contest. Reilly placed first and Lily placed second. CONGRATULATIONS, LADIES!!

Rock Springs First Graders study Rocks and Minerals through Cross-Curricular Unit

Rock Springs Elementary 1st Graders studied Rocks and Minerals through a Common Core unit encompassing all areas of learning.  Students used non-fiction informational texts to differentiate the characteristics between igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

Hands-on Math stations allowed first-graders to use various tools of observation to weigh, compare, estimate and gather data on various rocks.  Each student then published their findings in their own take-home foldable product.  The unit culminated with a visit from a real geologist!

Ketron 3rd Graders treated to a READING CELEBRATION field trip

Ketron Elementary School's 3rd graders were treated to a READING CELEBRATION field trip. Principal Wendell Smith was inspired during a visit to Pam Wolfe's class, where a student excitedly read aloud to him. Mr. Smith, Mrs. Wolfe, Mrs. Angie Sybert and Pastor Phil Whittemore of Bloomingdale Baptist Church coordinated the day's event

The entire field trip was free for the 120 Ketron students. Bloomingdale Baptist Church provided a generous meal and the materials for a Christmas tree ornament craft. The church served Chick-fil-a chicken nuggets, and a buffet of fresh vegetables and fruits. Students were encouraged to eat until full. While enjoying the meal, students were entertained by professional clown and 4th grade teacher. Kevin Armstrong. To their surprise, Mr. Armstrong created a variety of balloon animals for the students. Ketron Art Teacher, Mr. David Meade with the assistance of church members directed the students in the creation of an unique glass ornament.

Next, the students were given a tour of the Bloomingdale Public Library. Librarians introduced the students to the benefits of owning a library card. Parents were encouraged to meet their children at the library to apply. While parents registered, the students were treated to a read aloud session. Each student was given a candy cane and a book marker to use in their copy of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

Finally, the students entered the Bloomingdale Ruritan Building, where they were greeted by Storyteller Saundra Kelley. Mrs. Kelly is an International Storyteller, published author and president of the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild. The students sat around the fireplace at the feet of Mrs. Kelley, who was dressed as "Grandmother" in her nightcap and red sweater and long plaid skirt. The children sat in silent awe as she spoke.

The field trip was a huge success thanks to the collaborative efforts of Ketron Elementary School and Bloomingdale Baptist Church.
