Rock Springs 3rd Grade Cross-Curricular Common Core Unit: The Race Against Death

Third graders at Rock Springs Elementary participated in a common core cross-curricular unit using an article called Race Against Death from their Storyworks magazine. This non-fiction article was about the dogs and mushers, including Balto, who saved the people of Nome, Alaska by delivering a serum to cure diphtheria. Science and social studies were incorporated through lessons on map skills, wants vs. needs, and inherited traits. Math lessons involved lots of activities including  mapping the distance for each leg of the relay to scale and a multiplication math task.

In reading class, students created Venn Diagrams to compare and contrast, identified character traits and motivations, did web quests and research projects on Nome and diphtheria, and rewrote and illustrated the story from the voice of Balto.  All of this work culminated in a project that filled one wall in the hall of the third grade pod. This was truly a team effort that involved lots of close reading, text evidence, and the common core standards. For some added excitement, forty-two of the third graders were able to stay after school one day to watch the animated Balto story!

Ketron Elementary Launches Afterschool Intervention Program

Ketron Elementary School launched KIP: Ketron after school Intervention Program on Tuesday, January 8th. Participating 3rd -5th grade students receive free tutoring by licensed teachers in Math and Reading. The sessions address the student's individual needs and correlate to Tennessee State Standards. They also participate in a STEM focused activity.

On Tuesday, Miss Historic Jonesborough and former Ketron student, Emilee Ketron volunteered to provide the STEM session. Miss Ketron demonstrated how student can recycle pine cones into bird feeders. She explained how many local birds will benefit from the addition of the feeders during the colder months. She graciously provided the materials for each KIP student.

On Thursday, Principal Wendell Smith engaged the students by providing lumber and tools for the construction of raised flower beds. Mr. Smith discussed measurement - standard and nonstandard, perimeter, and angles. The students were excited to use the cordless drill to make pilot holes for the screws. They will continue the assembly next week and the beds will be used on the school campus.

Comments by students:

"KIP is the best part of the day, I love it!!"

"I wish we stayed after school every day!"

"It's fun in all, cause we learn new stuff!"

"We took a little math test, so we know what to practice on, I like it!"
