Sullivan South Teacher Thomas Rutherford and Students to be involved in NASA Research on Active Galactic Nuclei as part of the NASA/IPAC Teacher Archive Research Project

Sullivan South High School teacher Thomas Rutherford attended the January 6-9 meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) in Long Beach, CA.  Mr. Rutherford attended as part of a program called NITARP, which stands for NASA/IPAC Teacher Archive Research Project.  This program allows teachers and their students, under the direction of a professional astronomer, to be involved with NASA research using archived (untouched) data from various air and/or space-born observatories.  Mr. Rutherford's group project will involve trying to establish a way to use active galactic nuclei (AGN's) as standard candles for determining distances to very distant objects.  AGN's are exteremely bright and can be seen from enormous distances (billions of light years).  The group will be holding weekly virtual meetings during the rest of the school year, then flying to Cal Tech this summer for additional work on the project.  The group will also attend the 2014 meeting of the AAS in Washington, D.C. to present their paper.

The new group of educators to begin NITARP faced the most competition for their positions since the program began because there were five applicants for every spot in the program.

The NASA Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC), based at Caltech, in Pasadena, CA, is leading this program. These teams use archival data from the Spitzer Space Telescope (part of the Spitzer Heritage Archive, SHA), the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED), the NASA Exoplanet Archive, the NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive (IRSA), all of which are based at IPAC, and other NASA archive holdings. Funding comes from the NASA Astrophysics Data Program (which is where professional astronomers go for Spitzer archival research), and the other archives at IPAC.

CHMS Students learn English, math, art, and history through a Quilt Lesson
Eighth grade students at Colonial Heights Middle School discussed geometry, art, and American Civil War history during a lesson in Mrs. Susan Weaver's class that included 90-year-old Margaret Benson providing tips on quilting.
Sullivan North High Robotics Team to Compete in "Ultimate Ascent"

Members of the Sullivan North High School Robotics Team viewed the annual USFIRST kick off and picked up their kit of parts on Saturday - 5 January.  The team has six weeks to design, construct, test and be ready for regional competition in late March.  This year's game, "Ultimate Ascent" will be played by two competing alliances on a flat 27 x 54 foot field.  Each Alliance consists of three robots competing to score as many discs into their goals as possible during an approximate 2 minute 15 second period.  The match will end with robots attempting to climb up pyramids located near the middle of the field.  Robots earn points based on high it climbs as well as how many discs are put in goals.

This is the second year Sullivan North has participated in this project and are thankful for the community and business support provided to help cover cost associated with the robotics effort.

Sullivan South DECA Marketing Club Students to Compete at Regional Competition
Mr. Darden's DECA Marketing Club at Sullivan South is preparing for Regional Competition on February 7 at the Music Road Convention Center in Pigeon Forge.  Thirty-four high schools will be represented there, and Sullivan South will be taking 24 students to this exciting event.  The competition consists of an on-line test and two role plays highlighting dynamic marketing situations.  State Competition will be at the Opryland Hotel and Convention Center in Nashville on March 7-9.  Last year Sullivan South took 17 students to State Competition, and we are looking to take MORE this year!
