Blountville Elementary Students Explore Water Cycle Through Growing Crystals
Blountville Elementary Elementary's Second grade grew crystals as part a STEM lesson. Students explored the water cycle. They learned about the effects and changes caused by evaporation, and condensation through informational texts and hands on experiences.

IA Students Research, Write, Build, and Present  About Modern Living
A Christmas Carol: A Nod to the Mod" was the culminating event for our fifth unit of study, "Modern Living". We utilized the traditional holiday literature, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, as the basis of our transdisciplinary learning experiences. Our students adapted the script, made, prepared, and presented this event for our community. Students utilized their scientific and mathematical skills to design and build the set. The students also worked in small groups to research industrialization and urbanization and then adapted the play to highlight important characteristics for various eras throughout history. The purpose of presenting each scene in a different era was to illustrate the effects of industrialization and urbanization and demonstrate how modern living has changed over the past 150 years.  Between scenes, students demonstrated their learning with Keynote presentations based on their current studies in science and math.

This culminating event was made possible through a series of projects including our Energy Audit, STEM Through Construction, and Engineers of Style. Overall, the culminating event, "A Christmas Carol: A Nod to the Mod", encompassed all standards and skills taught during the Modern Living Unit in each subject area.
Holston Elementary STEM Explorations and Investigations

Here 3rd grade students are using Zome tools to investigate bridge structures. The groups were asked to cross the same distance with their structure but the design was up to them. This was one of the groups that decided that triangles would make a strong structure.

During an project on engineering 4th grade groups were presented with the challenge to build the tallest towers using our Zome Tools. The towers were planned, constructed, and modified all during a 45 minute class period. These are the results from one of the classes.

Students are able to use technology in a variety of investigations and explorations. Here 4th graders are using our Verneir Labquest volt meter to observe differences in a variety of circuits they have constructed.

Fifth graders are using some microscopes at our touch table to see what they can find in our moss water samples. Our ultimate goal was to find water bears (Tardigrades).

Students have an opportunity to practice their measuring and lab skills at our wet lab center. Students make predictions and observations of mixers and solutions they have created. Here a second grader is making some careful additions to a mixture.

This is a fifth grade team working to construct a vehicle that is designed to be powered only by a puff of air from a team member. Students were given a variety of materials and particular constraints. Each group had varying designs and results.

STEM Bridges Projects at Emmett and Bluff City Elementary Schools
Emmett Elementary:

Fifth grade STEM students at Emmett Elementary have been building bridges!   The challenge was to build a bridge that would hold as much weight as possible using only thin pieces of balsa wood and green wood glue.   After carefully planning, measuring and assembling the bridges....the time came to put the bridges to the test.  Each group slowly poured sand into a bucket suspended below the deck of their bridge.  There was lots of cheering as each bridge collapsed from the weight of the sand!   After all the sand was poured and all the bridges were in pieces, the winning bridge was announced.   Weighing only 46 grams, the strongest bridge held 39 pounds of sand!   Congratulations to our fifth graders on such an amazing project!

Bluff City Elementary:

Bluff City Elementary students just completed a unit on Bridges in STEM lab.  Students designed, constructed, and then tested the strength of their bridges.  Different grade levels used different materials to construct their bridges - from toothpicks and marshmallows to balsa wood.
Rock Springs Elementary Loves to Read

Third graders at Rock Springs Elementary school have several opportunities to be part of afternoon reading programs.  Molly, a therapy dog, comes and reads with one of the afternoon book clubs each week.  Molly is a sproodle belonging to Drenda and Jim Phillips - you may have seen her "brother" Curt play for Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl!  He is a graduate of Sullivan South High School.

In addition to the book club that meets with Molly, third graders also have the opportunity to be part of parent/child book clubs that encourages parents and children to read together.  Book discussions are held with third grade reading teacher Julie Anderson.

Blountville Elementary Positive Behavior Program

Blountville Elementary used Thursday and Friday as review days for their School Wide Positive Behavior Program.    Students traveled around the school to reinforce the expectations at different locations in the building.  For example, all students loaded a bus and reviewed how to 1) Be Responsible, 2) Be Respectful, and 3) Be Safe while on the bus.  Students visited 10 different locations during the two days.  The theme for this year is: BES is "On Board" with School Wide Positive Behavior.  A poster contest is also underway.
