CHMS Veteran's Day Program

On Friday, November 9, Colonial Heights Middle School invited the community to help the school celebrate and thank veterans.  The program, coordinated by Amy Diamond of the social studies department, included a choral presentation by the CHMS chorus, led by Carolyn Barry, and an enactment of the Iwo Jimo memorial by Sullivan South ROTC cadets.  All veterans were invited to enjoy breakfast prepared by the wonderful staff of the CHMS cafeteria, and the students were provided the opportunity to have a professional photo taken with the veterans in their family.  It was an entertaining program which invoked many memories for veterans and community alike

SCHS Students Visit L.C. King Company and Bridgeforth Design Studio
Students from Sullivan Central High's Culinary Arts and Family/Consumer Science classes traveled to Bristol to visit L.C. King Company (makers Pointer Brand clothing) and Bridgeforth Design Studio.  Jack King from Pointer Brand gave students a tour of the factory and everyone received a L.C.King hat.  The students were thrilled!

The group then visited Serendipity Boutique where Sarah Jane Hull explained the retail and design process of the fashion and merchandising industry.

Bridgeforth Design Studio was the next stop where students got a demonstration of the design process in product design as well in video gaming design.  The owners, Bryan and Marie Bridgeforth, emphasized to students the importance of learning everything possible while in school because it is used everyday with projects and design work.  They gave examples of how history and geometry may be used in design certain games.

The trip concluded with a loft tour.  At the end of the day, students were exhausted but had a great time.

Blountville Middle News

Blountville Middle School has had a very busy November. The school had a mock election on November the 1st. Voting booths and ballot boxes were set up in the school gym where students marked their ballots. The math classes then tallied the votes and divided them into different categories so that the results could be graphed according to grade level and gender to the voter. Each grade presented the breakdown of the demographics to the school. Mitt Romney, with a 70/30 split, was the students' choice for president.

At the end of the week BMS recognized all the students who scored a 100% on one or more benchmark test. We are proud to say that 15 students achieved a 100 on at least one test. Students received a special lunch. A parent volunteer grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, while other parents donated homemade desserts. Students spent their lunch time in the library, and our hope is to double this number of students on the next benchmark.

On Monday, November the 12th Blountville Middle hosted a program to honor all military veterans and those who are currently serving in our countries military.  Mr. Davis, 8th grade social studies teacher and veteran, welcomed and spoke to all the faculty, staff and visitors. Students invited family members who have served and introduced them in the program. Mr. Malcolm's choir sang the "National Anthem" and "God Bless the USA". Veterans had the opportunity to speak about their service, and instead of having a minute of silence, the veterans received a full minute of standing ovation and applause for their sacrifices. The program was followed by a breakfast for all attending veterans and the BMS students who invited them.

Rock Springs Elementary Goes to  Self-Service in the Cafeteria

Rock Springs cafeteria has gone to self-service at lunchtime!  Students in grades 2 - 5 now have the option of choosing the food items that go on their lunch trays.  This change was complete with the help of the SCDE's maintenance department, who designed and installed a plexiglass plate to keep the PIN pad from falling between the cracks!

One Rock Springs second grader, when his grandfather asked him, "How is lunch at school?" replied, "It's great! I get to get it myself!"

Central Heights Holds Mock Election

Central Heights Elementary held a mock election on October 30th.  Librarian Carol Camponovo was responsible for organizing and implementing the event.  All students were educated about the voting process and the candidates and were then issued a voter registration card.
