Constructed Response Assessments
Parents may have heard their children talking about the new Constructed Response Assessment.  In preparation for our transition to the Common Core State Standards, teachers are working hard to help students understand how to not only work through the steps of more rigorous mathematical problems, but also begin explaining how they arrived at their answers.  As always, our teachers are developing creative approaches for our students to describe their solution paths and ensuing that your children are "ahead of the curve" as Tennessee ramps up its approach to Common Core.

Like many teachers in Sullivan County, Miller Perry Elementary teacher Gina Zimmerman has introduced students to easy-to-remember acronyms for solving Constructed Response math problems.  Her fifth grade students are learning to "LOVE" when working through the steps:  Label the parts of their answers, use wOrds to describe their thinking, draw or illustrate a Visual representation, and ensure they include an Equation.

Destiny Quest app Connects Students to their School Media Center
Our school media centers have completed their transition to a new online database called Follett Destiny.  The "Destiny Quest" app is available for free download for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.  Parents, students, and teachers can browse the school library from anywhere, see if books are available, see the latest additions to the collection, and, in the future, check out eBooks.  The url that is requested once launching the app is "destiny.sullivank12.net"and it will allow users to access the collection of any library in a Sullivan County School.

Sullivan Gardens hosts The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Halloween morning was full of chills and a few giggles for Sullivan Gardens K-8. The Jonesborough Repertory Theatre made SGS a part of their day tour with their production of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

We joined Ichabod Crane and the residents of Sleepy Hollow for a magically haunting performance. This adaptation of Washington Irving's classic story followed new schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane as he competes with Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt to woo the most eligible bachelorette in town, Katrina Van Tassel. Considered a superstitious schoolmaster with an overactive imagination, all came to a climax as Ichabod leaves a party and is chased by the Headless Horseman. What happens afterwards, nobody knows. This classic tale was both told and performed by Ben Bolt, Shelley Bolt, Lorianne Carver, Ricky Pentland and Lucas Schmidt.

"We can't wait to have more live theatre come to our school," says Kathleen Buttolph, SGS Performing Arts teacher. "After the show, we had a 'talk-back' with the cast and performing arts students. The students were able to ask the cast and crew questions about how they got their start in acting, getting into character, and how they memorize all those lines. It was a great experience!"

"This version is not done in the dark, spine tingling style of Tim Burton," commented director Janette Gaines. "While there are some intense moments, it's overall a comedy. It highlights the hilariously funny side of these Sleepy Hollow characters. That and the fact that it is a one act (approx. 1 hour) make it a great show for both younger and older audiences."

It was the perfect show for a school tour. After Sullivan Gardens, the cast traveled to Volunteer High School for a performance, then onto the Rogersville Playhouse for two evening performances. That's four performances in one day.

Lucas Schmidt (Ichabod Crane) added, "I've always liked the story. I grew up watching the animated movie. When the director encouraged me to audition for it, I did.  Ichabod is a lanky tall person and I am too; I thought it would be fun to try out," Schmidt said. "There's a lot of physical comedy for my character, which I love. Plus my cast mates are great and the directors are wonderful to work with."

Innovation Academy Students to Study Rainbow Trout, Water Quality
Students from Innovation Academy of Northeast Tennessee, a platform school of the TSIN, visited the Erwin National Fish Hatchery. Students toured the hatchery and learned about the habitat and life cycle of rainbow trout. Finally, the students got to feed the trout in their outside pond.

But best of all, students returned to their school with a cooler full of rainbow trout eggs. The eggs are being housed in the school's STEM Labs in equipment donated by Trout Unlimited, an organization that works for the conservation and protection of North America's cold water fisheries.

The water in the tank will be kept at a cool 50 degrees Fahrenheit to slow the growth process and allow students to care for the trout for the remainder of the school year. In addition to caring for the fish, students will be testing and documenting the water quality daily. Data will be graphed and analyzed.

In the spring, the trout will be released into the wild.

Rock Springs Veterans Day Program

Students and staff at Rock Springs Elementary School  honored veteran's today with a celebration honoring the upcoming Veteran's Day holiday.  The Rock Springs Rock Stars Chorus performed "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and "Veterans Day" for the crowd.  Sgt. Shawver and the Sullivan South Air Force ROTC then held a flag retirement ceremony.  ROTC members explained to students how to properly retire a flag once it becomes too tattered to repair.  Rock Springs Elementary School and Sullivan South High School proudly honors all service men and women this Veteran's Day and thanks them for their service to our country.
