BMS Students Work with My Sister's Wish Foundation

Blountville Middle School students completed a community outreach program with My Sister's Wish foundation.  "The mission of My Sister's Wish is to improve the quality of life of patients diagnosed with cancer.  It is our goal to decrease emotional strain placed on patients receiving treatment for cancer by providing much needed companion services and in-home needs.  It is also our goal to provide care giver respite time by having dedicated time in the home or in the treatment centers with patients therefore allowing family members the comfort and confidence to be able to leave the patient and pursue other needs or activities. "

Mrs. Nichols' Art class and Mrs. Hatcher's Library class combined for a week. Students traced, cut out, stitched and stuffed school colored pillows to be donated to local hospitals and patients. These pillows are used in the healing process after surgeries. Students also met a cancer survivor and founder of the organization. She shared some of her experiences with the students in a class discussion.  More information can be found at mysisterswish.com

Health Science Students attend ETSU Rural Health Science Career Fair

East TN State University, Division of Health Sciences held its 22nd Annual Rural Health Science Career Fair on Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012.  Students from Sullivan Central, Sullivan East, Sullivan North and Sullivan South were of the 19 high schools and three states represented at the career fair this year.

Doug Taylor, Assistant Dean, Student Affairs and ETSU's President Dr. Brian Noland welcomed the students to the campus. The hands-on career fair allowed students to explore human anatomy with cadavers, make pharmaceutical compounds, use state-of-the-art mannequin patient simulators, and speak with ETSU administrators, instructors and students. Whitney Snapp, a Sullivan Central student explained, "The day was so fun! It was great to learn about different health care careers and experience the hands-on activities." AJ Steffey, a senior at Central added, "The Health Career Fair was a wonderful opportunity and we had tons of fun!"

Before returning home, students concluded the day with a campus tour and lunch at the ETSU Market Place.  ETSU sponsors this yearly event to provide information and encouragement to rural high school students interested in pursuing careers in the health professions.

Bluff City Elementary EPIC Celebration

From October 22 - 30, Bluff City Elementary is celebrating the EPIC character, focusing on various character traits each day, with a color and theme.  For example, Tuesday was "Respect Shines Through!"

Other activities include students writing about an EPIC staff member (these are submitted and a drawing is held each day with a lucky staff member winning a door prize; a service project which includes collecting items for the "Children's Advocacy Center" and "My Sister's Wish" (organization that makes heart-shaped pillows for breast cancer patients); a parenting workshop, family math night; & family movie night!  This is also "bus safety" week so the students are getting a refresher course on transportation safety to and from school.  The PTA has helped us by funding Goodie bags for our bus drivers and police officers to show our appreciation for helping to keep us safe!
