NASA Engineer Todd Barber visits Innovation Academy

On Thursday, October 4, Todd Barber from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory spoke with the students at Innovation Academy.  He discussed the Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter missions.  Throughout his presentation, he answered students' questions and expanded their curiosity.  We are very grateful to Mr. Barber for sharing his time, talents, and knowledge with us.

Mr. Barber is a JPL senior propulsion engineer, now working as lead propulsion engineer on the Cassini mission to Saturn following part-time work on the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission and Deep Impact mission.  Todd also is working as a propulsion engineer on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, which dispensed a large rover to the red planet in November, 2011.  Cassini was launched on October 15, 1997 on its two-billion-mile, seven-year journey to the ringed planet.  The MER team launched launch twin rovers to the red planet in June and July of 2003, and Opportunity is still going strong eight years after landing.  Todd also worked as the lead impactor propulsion engineer on Deep Impact, which successfully crashed into Comet Tempel-1 on Independence Day, 2005, at twenty-three-thousand miles per hour!

Mr. Barber worked on the Galileo project for over seven years and his primary responsibility was getting Galileo into Jupiter orbit on December 7, 1995.  Todd also worked part-time on the Space Infra-Red Telescope Facility (SIRTF) mission and on the Stardust mission, as well as the Mars Sample Return mission and a Mars airplane study.  Todd received NASA's Exceptional Achievement Award in 1996 for his work on Galileo.  He also worked three years on the Deep Space One mission, the first NASA mission to use electric propulsion (a la "Star Trek").  This mission included flybys of a near-Earth asteroid, Braille, and a comet named Borrelly.

National 4-H Week 2012- October 7-13

In honor of National 4-H Week,  Sullivan County 4-H Extension would like to recognize one of the many outstanding parents and teachers we are blessed to have involved in the 4-H program in Sullivan County as volunteers.  The individual we chose has been 4-H member herself and shares a passion for educating youth and 4-H.  Our "Spotlight on Success" volunteer for National 4-H Week 2012 is Mrs. Teresa Calhoun.  Mrs. T, as her students call her, is a 4th grade teacher at Indian Springs Elementary.  We recently presented her with some questions related to her 4-H involvement.  You will find her responses at the following link:     https://utextension.tennessee.edu/sullivan/Pages/4-HYouthDevelopment.aspx

Thank you to Mrs. Calhoun for taking time to share her experiences and knowledge with us and thank you to all the Sullivan County Department of Education Administrators, Faculty and Staff who help us to make the Sullivan County 4-H Youth Development Program possible for our youth.

Sincerely,

Walter Malone and Vickie Clark
