Mary Hughes Celebrates Reward School Status

Mary Hughes recently celebrated being distinguished as a Reward School, an honor the school received for scoring in the top 5 percent of Tennessee's nearly 1,800 public schools on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP).

NASA Engineer Tracy Drain visits South High School and Rock Springs Elementary

Students at Sullivan South and Rock Springs were given the opportunity to meet Tracy Drain, an engineer from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is a division of the California Institute of Technology and manages the Juno Mission for NASA.

At Sullivan South, Tracy met with approximately 60 students currently taking Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, and AP Calculus.  Tracy presented in a well-paced, interesting manner that engaged the students and showed her enthusiasm about her job.  Several students stayed to speak with Tracy and ask her questions after the presentation.

At Rock Springs Elementary, all fifth grade students met with Tracy in the STEM classroom.  Tracy's energizing presentation included the most recent Curiosity Mission landing on Mars, as well as the Juno Mission, which is scheduled for an Earth flyby in October 2013 and a Jupiter arrival in July 2016.

Tracy was one of the team from NASA/JPL that just concluded an excellent professional development hosted by ETSU Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science at the International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough.  What a wonderful exposure of STEM in action in the real world as scientists and engineers work cooperatively to accomplish amazing things!

Colonial Heights Middle Pilots Word Generation Program

Colonial Heights Middle School is one of the pilot schools for the "Word Generation" academic vocabulary  program. Teachers in all content areas, plus related arts, incorporate five vocabulary words per week in their disciplines, employing several strategies (writing, debate, etc.) in order for students to obtain deeper understanding of the words through cross-content exposure.

All across the school, from classrooms to the library to the entrance to the gym, "Word Generation" words are displayed. This focus on academic language and relevance is clearly linked to the Common Core State Standards and we are pleased to be part of this program.

Our School Day Just Got Healthier

The school day just got healthier thanks to changes to school meals. As a parent, you have the ability to help make the school meal changes a positive and exciting experience for your child. The new school meals have more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables; low-fat milk; and less salty and fatty foods. School meals now do a better job of giving your kids the healthy foods they need. Help your child check out these new meals and find what they like.

It takes time to get kids to learn to like new foods. Here are some tips to help your children eat healthy foods:

  • Make time to join your child for lunch in the school cafeteria.

  • When your child gets home from school, ask what he/she ate for lunch.

  • Eat meals with your child as much as you can. Let your child see you eating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains at meals and snacks.

  • Grocery shopping can teach your children about healthy eating. Talk to them about where vegetables, fruits and grains, and milk and meat come from. Let your children make healthy choices.

  • Try new foods yourself. Describe how they smell, feel and taste. Offer one new food at a time. Serve something your child likes with the new food.

  • The School Day Just Got Healthier. Together we can help our kids learn healthy habits that last forever.
