Expect More, Achieve More Coalition
The "Expect More, Achieve More" coalition combines the efforts of about 100 education, business and civic organizations to help spread the word regarding Tennessee adopting national K-12 common core education standards. The state is in the second year of implementing the higher standards designed to raise public education outcomes. The new standards mean school is getting harder for students, and the new coalition offers resources to parents, teachers and communities to help them understand and adapt to the higher standards.

Raising education standards in Tennessee is critical to the success of our students and our communities. Reform is under way, and when people expect more, they usually get it. The coalition has created a helpful online resource to inform parents, teachers and communities about the new common core standards, what to expect and how they can help. The website is http://expectmoretn.org/.

Sullivan South CTE Students Place at Appalachian Fair

At the 2012 Appalachian Fair, Sullivan South won 3rd place for the Career and Technical Education school display and 1st place for the Cosmetology display. A wide variety of student entries placed in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions. The display was located in the CTE building near the main stage.

The School Cafeteria:  Why the change?

The School Nutrition Program is a federally funded program, which is reauthorized periodically by Congress.  The new reauthorization, called the "Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act," went into effect July 1, 2012.  The new standards require that:

    • No more than 10 percent of calories can come from saturated fat and schools must eliminate added trans-fat.
    • School meals must meet strict calorie limits.
    • Schools must gradually reduce sodium levels in school meals.
    • Cafeterias must offer larger servings of vegetables and fruit with every school lunch, and children must take at least one serving.
    • Schools must offer a wide variety of vegetables, including at least a weekly serving of dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes.
    • Milk must be fat-free or 1% (flavored milk must be fat-free).
    • Within two years, all grains offered must be whole-grain rich.

Look for more information to come about how Sullivan County is trying creative ways to meet the new guidelines.

Ketron Elementary School
Ketron Elementary School continues to be improved with the latest being the installation of the new iMac computer lab this week.  Students will be able to research, create, and learn in this state of the art facility.  The school sends a special thanks to Technology Supervisor, Evelyn Rafalowski, and her team for their work on the new lab.

The new building project is also nearing completion.  The art room, stage, and main gym are scheduled to be completed by the end of this month.  The new library is also in the process of shelving books on the new library shelves installed earlier this week.  Students will begin checking out books next week.

Ketron will be hosting PTA for grades 3-5 on Monday, Sept. 17 and for grades K-2 on Tuesday, Sept. 18.  Both programs will begin at 7:00 in the cafeteria.
