School Board Meeting Update 7-23-12
School Board Goals Discussion:
1. Improve student achievement
In the past year, Sullivan County has received district accreditation, implemented a code of ethical behavior, increased student achievement, implemented Scantron benchmarks, implemented the TEAM evaluation, and increased virtual learning. The next area of focus involves improvements at the high school level.
2. Increase efficiency and improve programs
Efficiency has been increased through fiscal responsibility resulting in a savings of $2 million that was budgeted to be used from the fund balance in 2011-12.
3. Improve stakeholder partnership and involvement
The system is focused on improving communication, parent support and satisfaction. The parent survey provided very good information. The survey relfects that parents are very pleased with what is going on in our schools. However, there can never be enough communication. One way this need is being addressed is through the purchase of software that will allow teachers to communicate grades and attendance information. This software is included in the existing budget.
Budget Details:
- The budget reflected a $6.8 million deficit on April 30th. This deficit was cut from $6.8 to $2.58 million in the approved budget, primarily through personnel reductions. The June 14th budget includes the 2.5% salary increase for all personnel. The July 12th budget reflects the anticipated property tax increase.
- A personnel organizational chart and spreadsheet identifying all positions in the system were provided for the school board. This includes the 237 positions that are funded out of the general purpose budget.
