STEM Platform School Update - Innovation Academy

Governing Board Meeting 5-29-12
 
Tonight the Governing Board set the student selection and lottery process for Innovation Academy.  A random lottery process will be held publicly for student selection on Wednesday, June 6 at 5:00 p.m. in the Eastman Auditorium.  Prior to the lottery, applicants will receive an email describing the process as well as a student lottery number.  Student lottery numbers will be drawn randomly for each of the four categories (county school 6th graders, city school 6th graders, county school 7th graders, and city school 7th graders).  There are forty available slots in each category.


As of 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29th, 472 applications had been received for Innovation Academy.  Of those, 202 are from Sullivan County students and 270 are from Kingsport City students.  The number of boy and girl applicants are approximately equal overall.  Of the 472 applications, 271 are upcoming 6th graders and 199 are upcoming 7th graders. The deadline for applications is 5:00 p.m. on June 1, 2012.


Teachers will be building the curriculum for Innovation Academy following professional learning sessions that emphasize the major concepts of the STEM school.  The first professional learning session will be held on June 12-13 and concentrate on collaborative, deprivatized teaching and reflective dialogue.  Additional sessions will be held focusing on technology, project-based learning, collaboration with STEM professionals, and the "STREAM" transdisciplinary curriculum.  The principal and teacher selections for Innovation Academy are expected to be announced by
mid-June.
