CHMS Students Create Children's
Books for School in Haiti

Kristen Kaudewitz, Linda Allen, and Jessica Hayworth's sixth grade Literature classes at Colonial Heights Middle School created their own children's books to donate to Jubilee School in Gonaives, Haiti.  The students also donated published children's books as well as several pairs of flip flops to the students of the school. We hope our outreach activity inspires others to see the importance of books and reading around the world.

Putting Children First Grant Helps Fund Math Centers and Success at SMS

LeAnn Farthing, sixth grade math teacher at Sullivan Middle School, was awarded a $750 grant through Eastman's Putting Children First Program.  With that money, she purchased a math program, Center Stage Math, that provides supplemental material for all of the topics covered in the sixth grade math curriculum.  In correlation with Farthing's library of manipulatives, students were provided the opportunities to work individually as well as through group centered activities, learning the curriculum at a higher level.

TCAP and EOC Scores

Sullivan County has received the quick score reports from TCAP and end of course tests.
Although the scores have not been publicly released by the state, they will be used in final grade calculations - just in time for report cards to come home next week.

Pondering at Miller Perry Elementary

Students at Miller Perry Elementary are learning to ask the right questions.  Above is Rhonda McConnell's questioning wall that relates Webb's depth of knowledge to the lifecycle of a frog.  On the wall, Level 1 questions are at the egg stage progressing through to Level 4 questions which are at the adult frog stage.  As students in the school ask questions in class, they refer to the questioning wall to see what level question they are asking.

Tennessee Transition
to the Common Core Standards

The Common Core State Standards will prepare Tennessee students with the most important knowledge and skills to compete in an increasingly global environment.  These standards will emphasize thinking, problem solving, and creativity, and introduce next generation assessments that will give students, parents, and educators better information about college- and career-readiness based on performance beyond multiple-choice tests.

Information about Tennessee's transition to the common core standards may be accessed at www.tncore.org.
