Ketron Students Team with RCAM,
Build Catapults
On May 9, eighth graders from Mrs. Chelsie Del Gaudio's STEM class at Ketron Middle School were given the opportunity to participate in a STEM project organized by Mr. Dennis Smith and the Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM). Students spent the entire day working with volunteers from Eastman and RCAM to build catapults. Each student was given the raw materials needed to create the catapult. Students had to use their knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and math to manufacture their raw materials into parts that would be used to build their catapults. At the end of the day, each student took home a catapult that they had created by applying their classroom knowledge in real world setting.

Mrs. Del Gaudio and her students would like to thank Mr. Dennis Smith for organizing such an amazing opportunity.

Bluff City Elementary STEM Day
Bluff City Elementary students enjoyed a STEM day with the opportunity to learn more about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. They enjoyed working with volunteers to create fun STEM-related projects. The day helped to show students the kinds of fun they could experience this summer at a two-week STEM camp that will be held at the school. Students in grades (upcoming) 3-5 will be divided into 2 units - "Aeronautics and Flight" and "Inventions". The students will be designing, constructing, and testing their own aircraft, from kites to rockets! They will also see what its like to be a true inventor. The camp will be from July 9-12 and July 16-19 from 9am-3pm.

"Found Poets" at Mary Hughes School
On May 8, 2012, the Found Poets Society of MHS conducted the first annual poetry reading at the Bristol Grind House coffee shop in downtown Bristol. Twenty MHS students formulate the Found Poets Society at Mary Hughes. These young poets were scholars in Mrs. Graham's sixth and seventh grade Creative Writing and Communications Tech classes. The students explored various forms of poetry through the lives of famous poets such as Italian sonnet poet Frances Petrarch, English sonnet poet William Shakespeare, ballad and sonnet poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Villanelle poet Dylan Thomas. After analyzing these strict poetry forms, the students generated original poetic works of art which were showcased at the poetry reading.
The Found Poets Society's first annual poetry reading was a momentous experience for these young poets. What better way to challenge the
minds and squeeze the hearts than through poetry expressions! Minds were challenged to meet the learning standards for reading and language arts which the students successfully accomplished. Hearts were squeezed, and emotions beyond the expected maturity level was poured into these original poems. I would like to praise these students for giving 100% effort to such intricate poetry forms. To the parents, families, friends, and teachers who packed out the coffee shop, thank you for contributing to the success of the Found Poets Society's first poetry reading.
