School Board Meeting Update 5-7-12

SCOPE
Student representatives from the Student Congress on Policies in Education (SCOPE) were recognized by the Sullivan County Board of Education for their achievements.  SCOPE unites students in 9th through 12th grades from across the state to discuss major topics in education.  Participants have an opportunity to discuss major topics and learn about education issues through mock school board meetings, discussions and debates.  Sullivan County participants include Jessica Colley, Jenna Harris, Matthew Proffit, and Matthew Scott.  Chairman of the Board Ron Smith presented a certificate to Jenna Harris at tonight's meeting.  More information about SCOPE may be found here.

This week is School Nutrition Employee Appreciation Week.  In recognition, School Board members wore pins for tonight's meeting.  We appreciate all of our school nutrition employees for their commitment to our students.

Chairman Ron Smith congratulated Sullivan Central baseball coach Brandon Krantz on achieving his 200th career win.

Energy Savings Contract
The school board is considering a new energy savings contract.  The contract is expected to bring significant savings over a ten year period. A new proposal will be brought before the board and reflect current facilities.  The contract will include an energy specialist and a software program to track actual savings.

STEM governing board
The STEM platform contract will be discussed at a Special Called Board Meeting on
May 16  at 4:00 p.m.

STEM Platform Update
The STEM Platform school has been officially named the Innovation Academy of Northeast Tennessee.  Parent information will be sent home with students this Wednesday, May 9, 2012.  Any rising fifth or sixth grade student in Sullivan County Schools or Kingsport City Schools may apply to attend Innovation Academy.  The governing board hopes to have completed the hiring process for the principal and teachers by the end of this month.

Sullivan County Schools' partnership in Innovation Academy of Northeast Tennessee is part of our school system's commitment to STEM education.  Emmett and Holston Elementary schools along with Ketron Intermediate already offer STEM curriculum to their students.  The county plans to expand the STEM program to additional schools in the 2012-2013 school year.

Ketron Elementary Update
Construction on Ketron Elementary School is approximately 75% complete.  The signature blue roof is currently being installed and significant amounts of interior work is in progress.  Several school board members plan to visit the school in June.
