Read for My School Campaign

By reading from the Pearson Foundation's digital libraries, Holston Elementary earned 111 books to add to their media center and classroom libraries.

The Pearson Foundation provides a free, online, digital library at www.wegivebooks.org.  Every time a book is read, We Give Books donates a book to a partner organization.  Teachers can also find daily activities to use with students to build and improve literacy skills.

STEM Partnerships for Education

Sullivan County Schools, in partnership with Northeast State Community College and area businesses, plans to implement an applied mathematics program founded by Perry Wilson.  Wilson demonstrated his "If I Had a Hammer" program at Northeast State Community College on May 3rd.  Participants experienced the hands-on, applied approach to learning fractions and measurement.

As part of the program, fifth grade students are engaged in a 2-hour construction and learning session that results in a free-standing 8' x 11' modular house, complete with windows, roof, and door. While building the house, students move from construction phases to short group activities and demonstrations designed to reinforce the academic and real-world lessons incorporated in the build.  The house can then be taken down and rebuilt by other classes. The follow-up curriculum then helps students make real-world connections to abstract mathematical concepts.

Innovation Academy of Northeast Tennessee - STEM Platform Update

The Governing Board officially named the STEM platform school "Innovation Academy of Northeast Tennessee."  A logo and website are currently under development. Information will be sent out next week via email and flyers explaining the concept of the school, conveying parent information meeting dates, and application information.

The search is still underway for STEM teachers for Innovation Academy.  Interested teachers should be innovative, able to integrate content standards, extremely comfortable with digital learning, and willing to work this summer.  Teachers will maintain tenure, pay, and benefits in Sullivan County.  An additional stipend will also be given for extended summer contract this year.   View the posting here

Cedar Grove Elementary Open House

Cedar Grove Elementary School will be hosting a community open house on Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 1 - 4p.m.  Community members are encouraged to attend this celebration of an outstanding school.  Memorabilia will be on display throughout the school and refreshments will be served in the cafeteria.

Common Core Math in Grades 3-8
The Math TNCore Focus Standards are drawn from the Common Core, specifically chosen by the Common Core Leadership Council as important areas for Tennessee's students to focus on.  In math 3-8 classrooms in the 2012-2013 school year, teachers will continue to teach the Tennessee Diploma Project (TDP) standards, minus the SPI's dropped from the TCAP (you will receive more information about this soon).  In adition, they will incorporate the TNCore Focus Standards for their grade level into their instruction.  These Focus Standards will help students gain a deeper understanding of key mathematical concepts that tend to be areas of struggle, and will help teachers and students prepare for the expectations of PARCC exams.

Cougar Courage 3K Race

The Cougar Courage 3k will be held on May 12, 2012 at 9:00 a.m..   Early registration available until  Saturday, May 5th. Please encourage your students to participate as well.  The pricing has been set up to allow as many as possible to participate.  There will be a new special award for winners in each age group!

In Brief

  • Beginning this school year, TCAP scores will be incorporated into the second semester (spring) final grade for the subjects of mathematics, reading/language arts, science and social studies. The student's TCAP score will comprise 15% of the final second semester grade.  The Tennessee Department of Education will calculate the TCAP conversion on a 1-100 scoring range and submit a score to the district for each third through eighth grade student for each of the content areas.  For high school students, End of Course (EOC) exams count 12.5% of the student's final grade in the course.
  • Reminder:  On May 14th all teachers and administrators will meet at Central High School at 8:00 a.m.  We will have breakfast and celebrate our outstanding accomplishments for the 2011-2012 school year.  Each school will have an opportunity to showcase a celebration item.  Teachers, please make sure you have registered using the link provided in your email invitation.
